In the present study, within and among breed genetic variability in seven native Turkish sheep breeds (Akkaraman, Dağlıç, Gökçeada, İvesi, Karayaka, Kıvırcık and Morkaraman) were analyzed based on 20 microsatellite loci. For the analysis, various statistical methods such as Neighbor-Net, Factorial Correspondence Analysis (FCA) and Structure were used. High level of genetic variability within the Turkish breeds was observed. Gene pools of the breeds were visualized and found that they are highly overlapping with each other. As one of the reasons of this overlap, genetic exchange between the breeds was suggested. Dağlıç, claimed to be the ancestors of first domestic sheep in Anatolia, seemed to be the most admixed one. Yet Dağlıç, despite being the most introgressed one, still might be exhibiting its uniqueness. Observations implied that conservation practices concerning Dağlıç must be urgently revised. Results of the present study do not support previous observations about the genetic differentiation patterns of the breeds within Anatolia. Possible reasons of the discrepancies between the observations were discussed. Genetically extreme individuals can be identified by Structure, Assignment and FCA tests. These methods are found to be promising in establishing new relatively pure breeds or in saving the breeds from further genetic contamination. Genetically outlier individuals were shown not to exhibit any distinct morphological differences. Unknown band patterns were found by RFLP and SSCP of mtDNA Control Region and the individuals harboring those were sequenced. They were shown to belong to the common haplogroups A, B or C. No novel haplogroup was found.

Bioinformatic analyses in microsatellite-based genetic diversity of Turkish sheep breeds
Acar, Hande; Togan, İnci Zehra; Department of Bioinformatics (2010)
In the present study, within and among breed genetic diversity in thirteen Turkish sheep breeds (Sakız, Karagül, Hemşin, Çine Çaparı, Norduz, Herik, Akkaraman, Dağlıç, Gökçeada, İvesi, Karayaka, Kıvırcık and Morkaraman; in total represented by 628 individuals) were analyzed based on 20 microsatellite loci. Loci were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reactions and products were electronically recorded and converted into [628 x 20] matrix representing genotypes of individuals. Reliability of the genotyping and ge...
Yerli koyun ırklarında bulunan genetik çeşitlilik
Soysal, İhsan M.; Togan, İnci Zehra; Ünal, Özkan Emel; Baştanlar, Koban Evren; Ergüven, Ayşe; Altunok, Vahdettin(2004)
Bu çalışmada, Türk koyun ırklarında mevcut genetik çeşitlilik 5 mikrosatelit lokusu kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Devlet üretim çiftlikleri, üniversite üretim çiftlikleri ve yerel yetiştiricilerin elinde bulunan sürülerden yerli ve melez onbir Türk ırkı (Akkaraman, Morkaraman, Kıvırcık, İvesi, Dağlıç, Karayaka, Hemşin, Norduz, Kangal, Konya Merinosu, Türkgeldi) ile bireyleri Irak'tan getirilmiş yabancı bir ırkı (Hamdani) temsil eden toplam 423 birey bu çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Bazı ır...
Revealing the history of Anatolian sheep domestication by using retrovirus integrations
Ayanoğlu, İhsan Cihan; Togan, İnci Zehra; Department of Biology (2013)
In the present study, it was aimed to contribute to the understanding of evolutionary history of sheep by using endogenous Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (enJSRV) integrations in 220 samples from 11 Turkish sheep breeds (Karayaka, Dağlıç, Kıvırcık, Sakız, Akkaraman, İvesi, Norduz, Karagül, Hemşin, Gökçeada and Morkaraman) and also in 30 samples from Anatolian wild sheep (Ovis gmelinii anatolica). Retrotypes of individuals were determined based on enJSRV integrations. The genetic distances between breeds were c...
Estimation of demography and seasonal habitat use patterns of anatolian mouflon (ovis gmelinii anatolica) in Konya Bozdag protection area using distance sampling
Özdirek, Lütfiye; Kence, Aykut; Department of Biology (2009)
The Anatolian mouflon (Ovis gmelinii anatolica) is an endemic ungulate subspecies and of IUCN Vulnerable status that inhabits Konya-Bozdag region located in Central Anatolia. In this thesis, the demography and habitat use of the only natural population of Anatolian mouflon at Konya-Bozdag Provice is studied. Throughout the study, distance sampling techniques, specifically line transect sampling, are used to estimate density, size and growth rate of this population. Sex, age and count data are used to estima...
The relationship between genetic and shape variation in endemic and endangered freshwater fish species pseudophoxinus
Telli, Murat; Kence, Aykut; Department of Biology (2008)
Evolutionary models addressing interaction between genetics and morphology propose that during development, morphological traits of organisms are under canalization selection resulting in constancy in morphology through evolutionary time. The hypothesis of genetic homeostasis predict that because of developmental buffering effects of heterosis, high level heterozygosity results in low level of morphological variance from the norms of canalized shape of the population. The aim of the present study is to test...
