Serum PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) level is used for prediction of prostatic carcinoma, but it suffers from weak sensitivity and specificity. We applied logistic regression, artificial neural networks, decision tree, and genetic algorithm to prostate cancer prediction problem to design a model for Turkish population. A hybrid model of logistic regression and decision tree has been designed. The model could prevent 33 biopsies (4.4% of our patients who have PSA level between 0 and 10) from our data set without a loss from sensitivity. The prepared online decision support tool and a questionnaire were published on a website. Fifty urologists have completed the questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.770. On a five graded Likert scale, the mean score of “attitude to computer use in healthcare” (ACH) was 4.2. The mean of eight responses related to the online tool (Attitude to Decision Support Tool; ADST), was 3.7. ADST was correlated with ACH (r=0.351, p=0.013). Physicians who have positive attitude to computer use in healthcare tend to use the tool (r=0.459, p=0.001). The first factor influencing the opinions of the urologists was the attitude of the user to computer use in healthcare, the other factor was the attitude of the user to the decision support tool itself. To increase the acceptance, education and training of physicians in the use of information technologies in healthcare, informing users about the logic of the decision support tool, and redesigning the system according to user feedback may be helpful.

Comparison of methods for prediction of prostate cancer in Turkish men with PSA levels of 0-10 ng/mL
GÜLKESEN, KEMAL HAKAN; KÖKSAL, İSMAİL TÜRKER; BİLGE, UĞUR; Saka, O. (2010-07-01)
Purpose: Several concepts to improve the diagnostic accuracy of prostate specific antigen (PSA) for prediction of prostate cancer have been studied. The aim of this study was to examine and compare the methods used for improving the diagnostic accuracy of PSA in a country with low incidence of prostate cancer
Examination of the dielectrophoretic spectra of MCF7 breast cancer cells and leukocytes
Çağlayan, Zeynep; Demircan Yalçın, Yağmur; Külah, Haluk (Wiley, 2020-03-01)
The detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in blood is crucial to assess metastatic progression and to guide therapy. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is a powerful cell surface marker-free method that allows intrinsic dielectric properties of suspended cells to be exploited for CTC enrichment/isolation from blood. Design of a successful DEP-based CTC enrichment/isolation system requires that the DEP response of the targeted particles should accurately be known. This paper presents a DEP spectrum method to inve...
A medical image processing and analysis framework
Çevik, Alper; Eyüboğlu, Behçet Murat; Oğuz, Kader Karlı; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2011)
Medical image analysis is one of the most critical studies in field of medicine, since results gained by the analysis guide radiologists for diagnosis, treatment planning, and verification of administered treatment. Therefore, accuracy in analysis of medical images is at least as important as accuracy in data acquisition processes. Medical images require sequential application of several image post-processing techniques in order to be used for quantification and analysis of intended features. Main objective...
Computerized hybrid decision-making system for hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women
Bacak, Hikmet Özge; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; TANAÇAN, ATAKAN; BEKSAÇ, MEHMET SİNAN (IOS Press, 2019-01-01)
BACKGROUND: The diversity of the results of different hormone replacement therapy (HRT) protocols and the fuzziness of the conclusions have caused problems in routine clinical practice.
Development of a novel zebrafish xenograft model in ache mutants using liver cancer cell lines

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme responsible for degradation of acetylcholine, has been identified as a prognostic marker in liver cancer. Although in vivo Ache tumorigenicity assays in mouse are present, no established liver cancer xenograft model in zebrafish using an ache mutant background exists. Herein, we developed an embryonic zebrafish xenograft model using epithelial (Hep3B) and mesenchymal (SKHep1) liver cancer cell lines in wild-type and achesb55 sibling mutant larvae after characterization...
