Many practical applications in the field of medical image processing require valid and reliable segmentation of images. In this dissertation, we propose three different semi-automatic segmentation frameworks for 2D-upper torso medical images to construct 3D geometric model of the torso structures. In the first framework, an extended version of the Otsu’s method for three level thresholding and a recursive connected component algorithm are combined. The segmentation process is accomplished by first using Extended Otsu’s method and then labeling in each consecutive slice. Since there is no information about pixel positions in the outcome of Extended Otsu’s method, we perform some processing after labeling to connect pixels belonging with the same tissue. In the second framework, Chan-Vese (CV) method, which is an example of active contour models, and a recursive connected component algorithm are used together. The segmentation process is achieved using CV method without egde information as stopping criteria. In the third and last framework, the combination of watershed transformation and K-means are used as the segmentation method. After segmentation operation, the labeling is performed for the determination of the medical structures. In addition, segmentation and labeling operation is realized for each consecutive slice in each framework. The results of each framework are compared quantitatively with manual segmentation results to evaluate their performances.

A comparative performance evaluation of scale invariant interest point detectors for infrared and visual images
Emir, Erdem; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this thesis, the performance of four state-of-the-art feature detectors along with SIFT and SURF descriptors in matching object features of mid-wave infrared, long-wave infrared and visual-band images is evaluated across viewpoints and changing distance conditions. The utilized feature detectors are Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), multiscale Harris-Laplace, multiscale Hessian-Laplace and Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) detectors, all of which are invariant to image scale and rotation. Feature...
Analysis of nanoparticle Transmission Electron Microscopy data using a public-domain image-processing program, Image
Woehrle, GH; Hutchison, JE; Özkar, Saim; Finke, RG (2006-01-01)
The need to easily and quickly count larger numbers of nanoparticles, in order to obtain statistically useful size and size-distribution data, is addressed via the use of a readily available, free, public-domain program for particle counting, NIH-Image (and 2 others derived from it, Scion Image and Image J), collectively referred to herein as Image. The best protocols that we have found useful for the use of Image are reported; both appropriate as well as problematic applications of Image are then illustrat...
Alignment of uncalibrated images for multi-view classification
Arık, Sercan Ömer; Vural, Elif; Frossard, Pascal (2011-12-29)
Efficient solutions for the classification of multi-view images can be built on graph-based algorithms when little information is known about the scene or cameras. Such methods typically require a pairwise similarity measure between images, where a common choice is the Euclidean distance. However, the accuracy of the Euclidean distance as a similarity measure is restricted to cases where images are captured from nearby viewpoints. In settings with large transformations and viewpoint changes, alignment of im...
Design of self-organizing map type electromagnetic target classifiers for dielectric spheres and conducting aircraft targets with investigation of their noise performances
Katılmış, Tufan Taylan; Yılmaz, Ali Özgür; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a type of neural network that forms a regular grid of neurons where clusters of neurons represent different classes of targets. The aim of this thesis is to design electromagnetic target classifiers by using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) type artificial neural networks for dielectric and conducting objects with simple or complex geometries. Design simulations will be realized for perfect dielectric spheres and also for small-scaled aircraft targets modeled by thin conducting...
