3D virtual worlds are emerging distance education technologies that offer collaborative learning environments and provide effective ways to apply task-based activities. The aim of this case study was to examine the contribution of task-based language learning in 3D virtual worlds to speak English as a foreign language among university preparatory class students in terms of anxiety, motivation, and self-confidence. Therefore, different English speaking practice tasks/activities were designed in Second Life. Participants had different roles based on the determined tasks and had speaking experiences with native speakers, friends, and instructors of METU preparatory school. Fifteen upper-intermediate level preparatory class students in the Department of Basic English at Middle East Technical University participated in the study which comprised a four week time span in May 2011. Data of the study included the qualitative data, gathered from the interviews. Those interviews were administered after the study to understand the effectiveness of task-based language learning in Second Life for students' anxiety, motivation, and self-confidence towards speaking English. According to the results, this study revealed important findings for language education field. The results of this study demonstrated the effectiveness of task-based language learning in Second Life environment which had positive impact on students. In this respect, it is suggested that the Second Life experience provided students to gain motivation and self-confidence and overcome their anxiety related problems towards speaking English. Therefore, this study may offer an insight for further studies to investigate the effectiveness of 3D virtual environments in language education, especially in Turkey.

Tokel, Saniye Tuğba (İnternet Teknolojileri Derneği; 2011-02-04)
3D virtual worlds provide new opportunities in higher education. Many universities in the world have been using Second Life, commonly used 3D virtual world, for educational purposes and they have been offering courses, conducting meetings, seminars and conferences in their Second Life Campuses. In this study, Second Life METU Campus has been designed and developed. During 2010 Fall semester, METU Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department Teaching Methods Course has been delivered in a blend...
3D learning environment for “conscious individuals & livable environment for elementary students
Kamalı Arslantaş, Tuğba; Cevizci Karataş, Esra; Leymun, Ceren; Tokel, Saniye Tuğba (null; 2011-06-01)
Virtual worlds are emerging technologies that offer collaborative learning environments for both synchronous and asynchronous distance education. Recently, there is an increasing demand for using 3D (three-dimensional) learning environments in all areas of education because of the affordances they provide for learning. Second Life is one of the virtual worlds developed by Linden Lab Company which gives the chance to users to interact with each other. Users make these interactions through avatars which ...
Virtual exchange in teacher education: focus on L2 writing
Hilliker, Shannon M.; Yol, Özge (2022-01-01)
Virtual exchange, as a global social practice, provides language teacher candidates with opportunities to connect their global peers and language learners. Integrated into teacher education, virtual exchange practices enhance teacher candidates' professional and pedagogical knowledge and practices. This study details a virtual exchange program between TESOL teacher candidates in Poland and the US and examines the transformations in teacher candidates' understanding and perspectives of theories and pedagogie...
The Role of VR as a New Game Changer in Computational Design Education
Sorguç, Arzu; Özgenel, Çağlar Fırat; Katipoğlu, Mert Ozan; Rasulzade, Ramin (2017-09-22)
With the rapid advances in technology, virtual reality(VR) re-emerged as an affordable technology providing new potentials for virtual learning environments(VLE). Within the scope of this study, firstly a general perspective on potentials of VR to create an appropriate VLE is put forward regarding the potentials related with learning modalities. Then, VR as a VLE in architectural education is discussed and utilization of VR is revisited considering the fundamentals of education as how to enhance skills rega...
Blended Learning in a Speaking Skills Course
Balbay, Seher (null; 2017-11-25)
Technological advancements and their growing impact in education have started to modify the structure and the required environments for learning settings. In order to benefit from technological innovations and minimize the present problems, such as the increasing number of students taught by a limited number of instructors, and time constraints allocated to actual speaking practice in speakingoriented courses, a blended learning platform is planned to be launched in Middle East Technical University in the s...
