This thesis analyzes the Visegrad Group’s stance toward the Russian-German Nord Stream and Russian-Italian South Stream gas pipeline projects, which aimed to circumvent the traditional energy routes situated in Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The level of the Visegrad Group’s dependency on inherited Soviet gas pipeline routes is examined alongside the Visegrad Group’s policy setting ability within the group itself and in the European Union. The thesis also traces the evolution of energy relations between Europe and Russia and Visegrad Group’s adaptation to the new state of affairs after the collapse of the Soviet Union, particularly with respect to energy issues. It is argued that despite all differences, Visegrad Group members are able to set a cooperation platform at times of crisis and develop common energy strategies. However, the thesis shows that the Visegrad Group’s endeavor has encountered some setbacks at the national level and serious challenges at the European level, largely owing to the lack of a common European energy policy. The thesis concludes that the Visegrad Group’s energy policy is both dependent on the stances of Russia and larger EU actors.

European Union's natural gas trade with Russia : competing priorities of supply security and supply diversification
Aydın, Ayşe Esra; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of Eurasian Studies (2012)
This thesis examines the bilateral relations of European Union and Russia in terms of energy trade. The main question of this thesis is whether European Union could realize its energy strategies of supply security and supply diversification in its natural gas trade with Russia. The main argument of this thesis is; Russia has been undermining the EU’s energy strategy, by using the contradictions between the EU’s energy strategy priorities of supply security and supply diversification. Emphasizing the signifi...
External and internal aspects of Azerbaijan’s energy policy : Europeanization process and its limitations
Taytaş Öztürk, Özlem; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of Eurasian Studies (2013)
The thesis examines the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union in the context of energy cooperation. The main research question of the thesis is to what extent Azerbaijan’s domestic and external energy policies are compatible with the European Union’s rules and regulations. The main argument of the thesis is that although Azerbaijan is compatible with the European Union externally, the country has largely opted for pursuing domestic energy policies which clearly differ from the Europe...
Turkey’s energy security and its energy cooperation with the European Union and Russia
Taşan, Fatma; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of Eurasian Studies (2008)
This thesis analyzes Turkey’s energy security and its energy cooperation with the European Union and Russia. The thesis argues that Turkey’s energy cooperation with Russia and the European Union’s energy dialogue between Russia contradict with Turkey’s claim to be an exclusive energy corridor between the Caspian Sea region and the European Union. The first part of the thesis deals with the energy security issue in terms of the diversification of energy routes and pipeline politics. In the second part, Turke...
State estimation of transient flow in gas pipelines by a Kalman filter-based estimator
Durgut, İsmail; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (2016-09-01)
In this study, real-time estimation of flow rate and pressure along natural gas pipelines under transient flow condition is aimed. The estimation of the internal states of gas pipelines is based on a recursive discrete data filtering algorithm called the discrete Kalman filter. The state space representation of the transient flow in gas pipelines, which is required for the filtering algorithm, is established by a discrete form of the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE's) describing the characteri...
Optimal control of gas pipelines via infinite-dimensional analysis
Durgut, I; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (1996-05-15)
A general optimal control approach employing the principles of calculus of variations has been developed to determine the best operating strategies for keeping the outlet pressure of gas transmission pipelines around a predetermined value while achieving reasonable energy consumption. The method exploits analytical tools of optimal control theory. A set of partial differential equations characterizing the dynamics of gas flow through a pipeline is directly used The necessary conditions to minimize the speci...
