With the inclusion of particle fillers in advanced continuous fiber reinforced composites, issues such as impregnation with increased viscosity of the injected resin leading to high process pressures and possible nonhomogeneous/directional composite properties due to filtering of filler particles necessitate the study of the relations between processing parameters and the resulting particle distributions. In this study, the particle-resin interaction during compression resin transfer molding (CRTM) and resin transfer molding (RTM) of particle filled advanced composites is experimentally investigated to propose particle filtration models that can predict composite microstructure. For this purpose an experimental set-up is developed and composite specimens are produced using RTM and CRTM processes for different fiber volume fractions and particle concentrations. The produced specimens are characterized to obtain particle filler distributions along the composites. A nearly constant particle distribution profile along the flow direction was found, indicating little filtration in RTM however in CRTM, particle content in composite increased towards the end of the flow length in composite. To model particle filled resin impregnation, a Darcy law-based porous flow model, coupled with particle filtration kinetics is adapted to RTM and CRTM processes. An appropriate commercial software tool, Comsol Multiphysics® version 4.3 is used for numerical implementation and solution. The filtration kinetics of the model is adjusted with respect to the experimental results by tuning the model parameters to match simulated particle filler distributions with experimental ones.

Design of Microstrip Quadruplet Filters on Filpro
Oruc, Sacid; Yıldırım, Nevzat (2018-11-02)
In this paper, a simple dimensional design procedure is developed for microstrip/stripline quadruplet filters by starting with direct BP synthesis of a lumped quadruplet with inverter couplings, K14, K12, K23 and K34. K14 is the cross-coupling inverter which creates a symmetric pair of finite transmission zeros (FTZ's) if the sign of K14 is opposite of the other inverters while a complex TZ is created if K14 has the same sign as the other inverters leading to linear phase (flat delay) responses. The LC reso...
Failure analysis of tapered composite structures under tensile loading
Çelik, Ozan; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
A three dimensional finite element modeling approach is used to evaluate the effects of preliminary design variables on the performance of tapered composite laminates under tensile loading. Hashin failure criteria combined with a progressive failure algorithm is used for in-plane failure mechanisms and cohesive zone method is used for out-of-plane failures. The modeling approach is validated by a comparison with experimental results from literature. The validated model is used to examine various design vari...
Implementation and characterization of an absorption filter for on-chip fluorescent imaging
Yıldırım, Ender; Arpali, Serap Altay (2017-04-01)
Here we present fabrication and characterization of an absorption filter with superior roll-on properties and precisely tunable cut-off wavelengths for fluorescent imaging applications in lab-on-a-chip systems. The filters were fabricated by spinning dye doped photopolymer (Orasol Yellow in Norland Optical Adhesive 60) on glass substrates. The fabrication technique allowed us to precisely tune the cut-off wavelength of the filters. We showed that filters with different cut-off in the range of 386 nm-504 nm ...
Thermal degradation of polythiophene-natural rubber and polythiophene-synthetic rubber conducting polymer composites
Hacaloğlu, Jale; Akbulut, Ural; Toppare, Levent Kamil (1997-01-01)
Thermal degradation of conducting polymer composites of polythiophene and rubbers was studied by direct and indirect pyrolysis mass spectrometry techniques. The samples were prepared by electrooxidation of polythiophene using natural rubber or synthetic rubber as the insulating matrix. Presence of decomposition products which were not observed during pyrolysis of pure polythiophene and rubbers, and disappearance of rubber-based pyrolysis mass peaks, together with changes in thermal stability and behaviour, ...
Mechanical properties comparison of strut-based and triply periodic minimal surface lattice structures produced by electron beam melting
Sokollu, Baris; Gulcan, Orhan; Konukseven, Erhan İlhan (2022-12-01)
The aim of this study is to make a comparative assessment of the compression and tensile behavior of two strut -based (body-centered cubic, BCC, and face-centered cubic, FCC) and three triply periodic minimum surfaces (gyroid, primitive, diamond) lattice structures produced by electron beam melting method from Ti6Al4V powder material. Compression and tension tests were performed and compared with finite element analysis results. Moreover, scanning electron microscope analysis for dimensional variation and o...
