Considering the latest three major earthquakes occurred in Turkey, the performance of the bridges could be evaluated as successful. Bridges are one of the most important members of transportation network and it is important for them to survive during earthquakes. Contrary to the general belief, minimum damage during earthquakes mean very high safety factors included to the design rather than a success. Up to now, the bridges designed in Turkey are based on AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and a modified version of LFD Bridge Design Specification. General Directorate of Highways (KGM) and Middle East Technical University (METU) conducted a project, (Türkiye Köprü Mühendisliğinde Tasarım ve Yapıma İlişkin Teknolojilerin Geliştirilmesi Kılavuzu ) based on Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) to update current practice in Turkey. However this recently published specification has not been used widely in design practice. For this reason, in this study the bridges are designed based on AASHTO LFD. By selecting different number of spans, column heights and lengths of column long side, the models are generated. The bridge columns are designed with gross and effective sections. The effect of 50 years of deterioration is taken into consideration and the initial and final conditions of bridges are compared. Based on this study, it is concluded that, overdesigned bridges are obtained due to selection of gross section columns. In addition, a deterioration model and average strength loss due to deterioration are proposed.

Developing an innovative architectural and structural solution for seismic strengthening of reinforced concrete residential buildings
Toker, Saadet; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Architecture (2004)
The recent earthquakes in Turkey have shown the poor seismic performance of reinforced concrete. This led to widespread utilization of several strengthening methods, each of which is convenient in different aspects. However, what is required to apply any of these methods is to evacuate the building in question since the interruptions are mostly within the building and to the structural members. This study proposes a method for external strengthening of typical five storey reinforced concrete buildings that ...
An experimental study on two different strengthening techniques for RC frames
Erdem, Ibrahim; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Ersoy, Ugur; Ozcebe, Guney (Elsevier BV, 2006-11-01)
Thousands of RC buildings were severely damaged or collapsed in Turkey during the past major earthquakes due to various deficiencies. This has initiated extensive experimental studies on strengthening methods. In this study, two 1/3-scale, two-story, three-bay undamaged frames were tested to compare two types of strengthening techniques experimentally. Both undamaged frames were designed such that they had the common deficiencies of existing buildings in Turkey. One of the frames was strengthened with RC in...
Comparison of mean site-specific response spectra in Turkey with the design spectra of AASHTO
Mestav Sarıca, Gizem; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Seismic design of bridges is a significant problem for all seismically-active countries including Turkey which has gone through recent destructive earthquakes. Bridges are important elements of transportation and their robustness is important in the aftermath of major earthquakes. Turkish engineers currently employ a modified version of AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) LFD Design Specifications for bridge design. Within the scope of a national project (TÜBİTAK 110G...
Preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment of existing reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey - Part I: Statistical model based on structural characteristics
Ozcebe, G; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih; Aydogan, V; Yakut, Ahmet (2003-05-13)
The 1999 earthquakes caused huge damage and economic losses in Turkey. The city of Duzce, hit by the second earthquake of Mw=7.2, suffered widespread damage to many RC buildings. Survey teams conducted post-earthquake evaluations on selected buildings that suffered various degrees of damage. The information collected was analyzed to set up a correlation between the attributes affecting seismic performance and the observed damage. A procedure, developed using a statistical method called discriminant analysis...
Cost-benefit analysis for various rehabilitation strategies
Çetinceli, Serkan; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Over the last decade, six major earthquakes that occurred in Turkey dramatically demonstrated the poor performance of the buildings that were designed and constructed far from Turkish seismic code̕s requirements. The Marmara region, where most of the population and industry is located, is in the active seismic zone. With the rising cost of damages due to earthquakes, the necessity of the cost-benefit analysis for various rehabilitation strategies used in existing buildings has become a major concern for the...
