Inspection of buildings throughout their lifecycle is vital in terms of human safety as the number of structures increases expeditiously. However, it is not easy to perform inspections for all cases. Physical reachability and complexity of the buildings are major problems along with the safety of inspectors during on-site operations. In this context, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have recently shown great performance collecting visual data through autonomous exploration and mapping in building inspection. Yet, the number of studies is limited considering the post processing of the data and its integration with autonomous UAVs. These will enable huge steps onward into full automation of building inspection. In this regard, this work presents a decision making tool for revisiting tasks in visual building inspection by autonomous UAVs. The tool is an implementation of fine-tuning a pretrained Convolutional Neural Network for surface crack detection. It offers an optional mechanism for task planning of revisiting pinpoint locations during inspection. It is integrated to a quadrotor UAV system that can autonomously navigate in GPSdenied environments. The UAV is equipped with onboard sensors and computers for autonomous localization, mapping and motion planning. Additionally, a Graphical User Interface is developed in order to wrap the high-level features of the system for users. The integrated system is tested through simulations and real-world experiments. The results show that the system achieves crack detection and autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments for building inspection.

A Methodology for real-time sensor-based blockage assessment of building structures during earthquakes
Ergin, Tuluhan; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Kurç, Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
During and after earthquakes, occupants inside a damaged building should be evacuated rapidly and safely whereas related units outside the buildings (e.g. first responders) should know the current condition of the building. Obviously, this information should be as accurate as possible and accessed timely in order to speed up the evacuation. Unfortunately, absence of such information during evacuation and emergency response operations results in increased number of casualties. Hence, there arises a need for ...
A practical guide for testing of complex geometry components by meter-display eddy current instruments
Doyum, Ahmet Bülent; Ertekin, S (1997-11-01)
Reliability and the reproducibility of results have always been an important concern in non-destructive inspection (NDI). This is especially the ase if the component is critical and has to be inspected periodically. If components are to be examined by Eddy Current Testing (ECT), the test procedure must take into account all the related parameters such as lift-off, geometry, possible conductivity and permeability changes on the test surface as well as the operator dependence. The utilisation of easy to manuf...
An approximate procedure for estimating the member demands in mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings
Akpinar, Ugur; Binici, Barış; Yakut, Ahmet; Tuncay, Kağan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-01-01)
Seismic assessment of mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings is important for urban seismic risk reduction. Nonlinear time history analysis is the state-of-the-art analysis tool for this purpose. However, the number of such buildings may reach to several tens of thousands in metropolitan cities of earthquake prone countries. This necessitates faster yet sufficiently accurate assessment methods to mitigate the seismic risk. In this study, a simple and efficient approach is developed and validated for the ass...
A comparative study on different analysis approaches for estimating the axial loads on columns and structural walls at tall buildings
Kurç, Özgür (Wiley, 2013-04-01)
Estimating axial loads on columns and structural walls at tall buildings is a complicated task because time-dependent deformations of concrete and the way the building is constructed affect the way the gravity loads are carried by them. The accurate computation of axial loads is crucial for determining the size and strengths of columns and structural walls. This study investigates several analysis approaches commonly used during the design of such buildings. Construction sequences, time-dependent deformatio...
Modelling effects of insufficient lap splices on a deficient reinforced concrete frame
Lin, Wesley Wei -Chih; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Binici, Barış; Department of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (2013)
In order to reduce seismic risk in vulnerable buildings, buildings identified to be at risk should be assessed and strengthened. Performance evaluation of deficient buildings has become a major concern due to devastating earthquakes in the past. In order to justify new provisions in design and assessment codes, experiments and analyses are inherently necessary. In this thesis study, investigations into the behaviour of two deficient reinforced concrete frames built at Middle East Technical University’s Str...
