The implementation of effective flood management particularly in ungauged basins requires regional frequency analysis (RFA) to determine the occurrence probabilities of extreme precipitation events. In this context, the quality control and homogeneity analysis of daily precipitation series of 37 stations in Northern Cyprus are carried out and trend analyses are employed to assess the variability of extreme precipitation indices. The increasing trends especially in winter period are dominated the northern part of the island. Then, identification of homogeneous regions is performed by utilizing the time series clustering approaches as a new perspective in RFA and the quantile estimates for different return periods are obtained. The flood hydrographs generated from the SCS Unit Hydrograph approach are provided to the outlet of Kanlıköy and Gönyeli ponds which are the boundary conditions for the river model. Moreover, 1D model MIKE 11 for the Kanlıdere River’s tributaries is developed to simulate the flow in main channel. Besides, the flow depths, velocities, and flood inundation extent on floodplain is detected by 2D MIKE 21 model. MIKE FLOOD coupling of MIKE 11 and MIKE 21 is used to simulate the flood event in 2010 and the flood inundation maps are generated based on the different scenarios. Flood mitigation alternatives, such as dredging and increasing crest elevations of dam and spillway for Gönyeli Pond, and implementation of a new upstream detention facility for Kanlıköy Pond were proposed. The proposed structural measure shows that Nicosia can be protected from flooding up to approximately 500-year return period.

Investigation of the groundwater modelling component of the Integrated Water Flow Model (IWFM)
Ercan, Ali; Dogrul, Emin C.; Kadir, Tariq N. (2016-01-01)
The Integrated Water Flow Model (IWFM), developed by the California Department of Water Resources, is an integrated hydrological model that simulates key flow processes including groundwater flows, streamflow, stream-aquifer interactions, rainfall-runoff and infiltration. It also simulates the agricultural water demand as a function of soil, crop and climatic characteristics, as well as irrigation practices, and allows the user to meet these demands through pumping and stream diversions. This study investig...
Evaluation of a satellite-based global flood monitoring system
Yılmaz, Koray Kamil; Tian, Yudong; Hong, Yang; Pierce, Harold F. (2010-01-01)
This study provides an initial evaluation of a global flood monitoring system (GFMS) using satellite-based precipitation and readily available geospatial datasets. The GFMS developed by our group uses a relatively simple hydrologic model, based on the run-off curve number method, to transform precipitation into run-off. A grid-to-grid routing scheme moves run-off downstream. Precipitation estimates are from the TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA). We first evaluated the TMPA algorithm using a...
Calibration and evaluation of a flood forecasting system: Utility of numerical weather prediction model, data assimilation and satellite-based rainfall
Yücel, İsmail; Yılmaz, Koray Kamil (2015-04-01)
A fully-distributed, multi-physics, multi-scale hydrologic and hydraulic modeling system, WRF-Hydro, is used to assess the potential for skillful flood forecasting based on precipitation inputs derived from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the EUMETSAT Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimates (MPEs). Similar to past studies it was found that WRF model precipitation forecast errors related to model initial conditions are reduced when the three dimensional atmospheric data assimilation (3DVAR)...
State estimation of transient flow in gas pipelines by a Kalman filter-based estimator
Durgut, İsmail; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (2016-09-01)
In this study, real-time estimation of flow rate and pressure along natural gas pipelines under transient flow condition is aimed. The estimation of the internal states of gas pipelines is based on a recursive discrete data filtering algorithm called the discrete Kalman filter. The state space representation of the transient flow in gas pipelines, which is required for the filtering algorithm, is established by a discrete form of the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE's) describing the characteri...
Effectiveness of combined sewer overflow treatment for dissolved oxygen improvement in the Chicago Waterways
Alp, Emre; ZHANG, HENG; Lanyon, R. (IWA Publishing, 2007-01-01)
An Use Attainability Analysis (UAA) has been initiated to evaluate what water-quality standards can be achieved in the Chicago Waterway System (CWS). There are nearly 200 combined sewer overflow (CSO) locations discharging to the CWS by gravity. Three CSO pumping stations also drain approximately 140 km(2). Because of the dynamic nature of the CWS the DUFLOW model that is capable of simulating hydraulics and water-quality processes under unsteady-flow conditions was used to evaluate the effectiveness of wat...
