This work covers studies on systems with car tire regrind used as the toughening phase in epoxy resins. Different surface modification techniques were used to improve the compatibility at the interface between the rubber particles and the epoxy matrix Silane coupling agents, plasma surface modification and acrylic acid/benzoylperoxide were used to enhance the surface properties of rubber particles. Rubber parts of ground used car tires, with or without surface treatment, were mixed with epoxy. This mixture was poured into molds to obtain mechanical test specimens according to ASTM standards. After curing, mechanical tests were performed and the fractured surfaces of the specimens were examined under Scanning Electron Microscopy. SEM. Throughout the studies, changes in mechanical properties were followed by an increase in the volume percentage of rubber particles and by the effect of different surface treatment processes applied on rubber. A decrease in tensile properties and impact resistance was observed in general as compared to unmodified epoxy. On the other hand, slight increases in fracture toughness values were observed in all surface treated cases.

Studies on the modification of interphase/interfaces by use of plasma in certain polymer composite systems
Akovali, G; Dilsiz, N (Wiley, 1996-04-01)
Calcium carbonate and carbon fiber surfaces were modified by use of a series of plasma polymers at different selected plasma conditions, and the effect of surface modification, mainly on the mechanical properties of composite systems prepared, was investigated. The matrices for the composite systems employed were polypropylene and epoxy, for the chalk and C fiber, respectively. Mechanical and thermal studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures revealed that inclusion surfaces, being independent ...
Effect of a carbon black surface treatment on the microwave properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/carbon black composites
Koysuren, Ozcan; Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur; Secmen, Mustafa; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (Wiley, 2008-07-05)
A surface treatment was applied to carbon black to improve the electrical and microwave properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-based composites. Three different formamide solutions with 1, 2, and 3 wt % concentrations were prepared to modify the surface chemistry of carbon black. Microwave properties such as the absorption loss, return loss, insertion loss, and dielectric constant were measured in the frequency range of 812 GHz (X-band range). Composites containing formamide-treated carbon black e...
Effect of Microfiber Reinforcement on the Morphology, Electrical, and Mechanical Properties of the Polyethylene/Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/Carbon Nanotube Composites
Yesil, Sertan; Koysuren, Ozcan; Bayram, Göknur (Wiley, 2010-11-01)
In situ microfiber reinforced conductive polymer composites consisting of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) were prepared in a twin screw extruder followed by hot stretching of PET/CNT phase in HDPE matrix. For comparison purposes, the HDPE/PET blends and HDPE/PET/CNT composites were also produced without hot stretching. Extrusion process parameters, hot-stretching speed, and CNT amount in the composites were kept constant during the ...
Contribution of carbon nanotubes to vibration damping behavior of epoxy and its carbon fiber composites
Avil, Esma; Kadioglu, Ferhat; Kaynak, Cevdet (SAGE Publications, 2020-04-01)
The main objective of this study was to investigate contribution of the non-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the vibration damping behavior of first neat epoxy resin and then unidirectional and bidirectional continuous carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composites. Epoxy/carbon nanotubes nanocomposites were produced by ultrasonic solution mixing method, while the continuous carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates were obtained via resin-infusion technique. Vibration analysis data of the...
Effect of fused deposition modeling process parameters on the mechanical properties of recycled polyethylene terephthalate parts
Bakir, Ali Alperen; Atik, Resul; Özerinç, Sezer (Wiley, 2020-08-01)
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) filaments made of recycled materials are desirable for environmentally friendly and sustainable manufacturing of prototypes and load-bearing components in many applications. We investigate the effect of FDM process parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed parts made of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) filaments. Increasing the nozzle temperature from 230 degrees C to 260 degrees C improves the strength of the specimens by 100%. Using a raster orientatio...
