Willow bark extracts have been used for centuries as a natural pain killer. Recently their potential as anticancer agents has been reported. We have shown the high antioxidant activity, phenolic and flavonoid content in the ethanolic extract of bark (EEB) from Salix aegyptiaca, a species endogenous to the Middle East. We have also reported that incubation with EEB resulted in a reduction in cell proliferation through the induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest via the inhibition of phosphatidyl inositol 3kinase/Protein kinase B and mitogen activated protein kinases signaling pathways as strongly as commercial inhibitors. The current study demonstrates the robust inhibition of anchorage-independent growth, motility, migration, and adhesion of colon cancer cell lines HCT-116 and HT-29 by EEB. These in vitro functional changes were accompanied by a restoration of E-cadherin expression, a reduction in EGFR, SNAI1, SNAI2, and Twist1 and the matrix metalloproteases MMP9 and MMP2. Many of these proteins are involved in the process of epithelial to mesenchymal transition, which is considered as a critical step in the progression of noninvasive tumor cells into malignant, metastatic carcinomas. We therefore propose that EEB from Salix aegyptiaca is a potent nutraceutical causing cancer chemoprevention by inhibiting epithelial to mesenchymal transition and can be consumed for its health promoting effects.

Salix aegyptiaca has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant for various health disorders. Our previous study demonstrated high contents of phenolics and antioxidants in its bark many of those are famed for their anti-inflammatory properties. Since inflammation frequently accompanies the progress of colorectal cancer, in the current study we showed that the ethanolic extract of bark (EEB) from S.aegyptiaca exerted strong anti-proliferative effects on several cancer cells but not on non-cancerous CCD-18...
Antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of Salvia fruticosa M. and its effects on gene expressions of some CYP450 and antioxidant enzymes in HT-29 cell line
Altay, Ahmet; Bozoğlu, Faruk; Tokuşoğlu, Özlem; Department of Biochemistry (2015)
Salvia genus is a widely cultivated as a perennial herb and used in medicine for various purposes due to its antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticarcinogen and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, the phenolic composition of water extract of Salvia fruticosa and possible effects of those constituents in cancer related drug metabolizing enzymes are investigated. S. fruticosa extract displayed high Radical Scavenging Activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals and also showed high Fe2+ Chelating Activity . To...
Effects of Medicinal Plant Sanguisorba minor Subsp. balearica on Selected CYP450 Isozymes and Proinflammatory Cytokines Activity in Inflammation Induced Rat Model: An Immunochemical Approach

Medicinal uses of plant extracts have been based on traditional knowledge without enough scientific evidence. Sanguisorba minor subsp. balearica was used traditionally to treat various diseases. This study was performed to evaluate the antiinflammatory effect of Smb. Experimental groups are; healthy control, CFA control, diclofenac sodium, quercetin, and 34-70mg/kg Smb treated groups. Antiinflammatory effect was examined on Complete Freund’s Adjuvant model, using biochemical, immunohistopathological, immuno...

In European folk medicine, Salvia species have traditionally been used to enhance memory. In our previous study of 55 Salvia taxa, we explored significant anticholinesterase activity of cultivated S. fruticosa. In this study, we compared the inhibitory activity of dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of 3 wild-grown samples and 1 cultivated sample of S. fruticosa against acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes (which are associated with pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease) by ...
Antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of Salvia Absconditiflora and effects on CYP1A1, CYP1B1 gene expressions in breast cancer cell lines
Yılmaz, Selis; İşcan, Mesude; Güray, Tülin; Department of Biochemistry (2013)
Salvia genus is a widely cultivated genus and used in medicine for various purposes as having antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticarcinogen and anti-inflammatory features. In this study the aim was to investigate phenolic composition of Salvia absconditiflora and understand the possible effects of those constituents in cancer related drug metabolizing enzymes. Salvia absconditiflora showed 80,43 % Radical Scavenging Activity against DPPH radical. Total flavonoid content was found as one third of total phenolic...
