Changes in the mechanical properties of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene/ammonium perchlorate-based composite solid propellants were studied during the curing period with respect to variations in the crosslink density, which was predominantly determined by the equivalent ratio of diisocyanate to total hydroxyl (NCO/OH ratio) and the equivalent ratio of triol to diol (triol/diol ratio). For this purpose, 16 propellants were prepared in different compositions through changes in the NCO/OH ratios (0.81, 0.82, 0.83, and 0.85) for each triol/diol ratio (0.07, 0.09, 0.11, and 0.13) and were tested for their mechanical properties immediately after curing. The propellants with an NCO/OH ratio of 0.82 had minimum stress, modulus, and hardness with maximum strain capability, whereas the propellants with an NCO/OH ratio of 0.85 showed just the opposite behavior. Variations in the isocyanate level seemed to have more effect on the mechanical properties at higher triol/diol ratios. It was also concluded that the propellants with triol/diol-NCO/OH combinations of 0.11-0.83, 0.11-0.85, 0.13-0.81, 0.13-0.83, and 0.13-0.85 were not acceptable for upper stage case-bonded rocket applications because of either high tensile strength or high modulus. Improved adhesive properties and bonding performance of HTPB-based polyurethane elastomer by using aziridine type bond promoter
Gercel, BO; Üner, Deniz; Pekel, F; Özkar, Saim (Wiley, 2001-05-02)
The effect of two aziridine-type bond promoters on adhesive and mechanical properties of a hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene-based elastomeric liner used in solid propellant rockets was investigated by varying the concentration to determine the optimum value. The performance of butyleneiminetrimesoylaziridine (BITA) was compared with that of tris[1-2-methylaziridinyl]phosphine oxide (MAPO) in the elastomeric liner of otherwise the same composition. The adhesive performance of the elastomer to the composite ...
PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PERLITE-FILLED HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENES .2. THERMAL AND FLOW PROPERTIES
AKINOKTEM, G; TINCER, T (Wiley, 1994-11-21)
Thermal and flow properties of perlite-filled high-density polyethylenes (HDPE), studied in the first part of the paper, are discussed. Maximum peak temperatures of endotherms (T-mp) and the corresponding relative peak heights were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The data obtained from a Brabender torque rheometer were evaluated to find the melt viscosities at low shear rate during preparation of perlite-HDPE composites. The filler concentration, types of HDPEs, and the use of gamma-APS...
Thermal characterization of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and GAP-based binders for composite propellants
Selim, K; Özkar, Saim; Yılmaz, Levent (Wiley, 2000-07-18)
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to investigate the thermal behavior of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and GAP-based binders, which are of potential interest for the development of high-performance energetic propellants. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and decomposition temperature (T-d) of pure GAP were found to be -45 and 242 degrees C, respectively. The energy released during decomposition (Delta H-d) was measured as 485 cal/g. The effect of th...
Mechanical properties of soft liner-poly(methyl methacrylate)-based denture material
Usanmaz, Ali; Latifoglu, MA; Dogan, A; Akkas, N; Yetmez, M (Wiley, 2002-07-18)
In this study, the mechanical properties of two different permanent soft lining materials and their bonding to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were compared. Both of the soft liners were heat-cured commercial materials. The polymerization was carried out by conventional methods suggested by manufacturer, and the curing was done at the temperature of boiling water for 5, 15, 25, and 35 min. The sample groups were tested in the computer-aided tensile-testing machine at a rate of 2 mm/min. The slow rate helps...
Effect of preparation parameters on performance of dense homogeneous polycarbonate gas separation membranes
Hacarlioglu, P; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yılmaz, Levent (Wiley, 2003-10-17)
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of preparation parameters on the membrane permeation mechanism and separation performances of dense homogeneous poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) membranes. Blade-casting and drop-casting techniques are used for casting films from solutions with varying concentrations. Chloroform and methylene chloride are used to determine the effect of the properties of the casting solvent. Permeation measurements are done with Ar, N-2, O-2, CH4, CO2, and H, gases. The selec...
