DIN 41Cr4 and DIN 42CrMo4 materials have been widely used in automotive driving elements. Although 42CrMo4 is more expensive than 41Cr4, it is more preferable in terms of material properties. In this study, these two materials were heat treated by austenitizing in a continuous furnace at 850 degrees C and quenched in oil at 90 degrees C. After they were tempered at various temperatures, mechanical properties were determined for each tempering temperature. The material properties for both materials were compared with each other. Results indicated that same mechanical properties for 41Cr4 and 42CrMo4 can be achieved by tempering 41Cr4 about 50 degrees C lower temperature than for 42CrMo4. In addition to the mechanical tests, fatigue tests were performed for both materials. Weibull distributions were plotted. Results indicated that 42CrMo4 had a longer life than 41Cr4 material.

Setup for testing the vibration-based loosening of pre-loaded bolted joints
Cavdar, F. Yildiz; Bilal, Halil; Güllü, Ramazan; Güler, Birtan; Ciğeroğlu, Ender; Cavdar, Kadir; Solmaz, Erol (Carl Hanser Verlag, 2019-01-01)
In this study, a test setup was designed and manufactured in order to study vibration based self-loosening characteristics of preloaded bolted joints, especially used in the automobile industry. Details of the designed test setup and its operating principles are presented in addition to the test setups available in the literature. Using the test system developed and implementing a design of experiments procedure, first trials were conducted by using the test setup. Under predefined conditions, it is possibl...
Analysis of heat treatment effect on springback in v-bending
Sarıkaya, Onur Turgay; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
Aluminum based alloys have wide area of usage in automotive and defense industry and bending processes are frequently applied during production. One of the most important design criteria of bending processes is springback, which can be basically defined as elastic recovery of the part during unloading. To overcome this problem, heat treatment is generally applied to the workpiece material to refine tensile properties. In this study, the effect of heat treatment on springback characteristics of aluminum stud...
Assessment of sheet metal forming processes by numerical experiments
Önder, İ. Erkan; Tekkaya, A. Erman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Sheet metal forming technologies are challenged especially by the improvements in the automotive industry in the last decades. To fulfill the customer expectations, safety requirements and market competitions, new production technologies have been implemented. This study focuses on the assessment of conventional and new sheet metal forming technologies by performing a systematic analysis. A geometry spectrum consisting of six different circular, elliptic, quad cross-sections are selected for the assessment ...
Analysis and design for aluminum forging process
Öztürk, Hüseyin; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
Aluminum forging products has been increasingly used in automotive and aerospace industry due to their lightness and strength. In this study, aluminum forging processes of a particular industrial part for the two different alloys (Al 7075 and Al 6061) have been analyzed. The forging part, forging process and the required dies have been designed according to the aluminum forging design parameters. The proposed process has been simulated by using the Finite Volume Method. In the simulations, analysis of the p...
Evaluation of elastomeric bearing performance at low temperatures
Yakut, Ahmet (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2002-08-01)
Recent studies on elastomeric bearings led to changes in the design specifications, which tend to indicate that bearings fabricated in the past, would fail the current test requirements. This is contrary to the fact that there have been no reported problems of poor bearing performance in low-temperature regions. AASHTO requires low-temperature tests to determine the change in the shear modulus, which is limited to a certain value. This criterion does not adequately address the performance of the bearings, b...
