AN ALGORITHMIC FRAMEWORK FOR ROUTEING LTL SHIPMENTS

1994-05-01
Akyılmaz, M. Özdemir
One way of reducing the unit cost of shipment by a motor carrier is to consolidate many LTL (less-than-truck-load) shipments. Explicit information on the route structure is a prerequisite to the understanding of the costs of the services provided and to the planning of the allocation of the equipment and personnel among the terminals. In this paper, an approach for routeing the LTL shipments is presented and is applied to a hypothetical network. Solution results of this example show that the algorithm offers an efficient and reasonably accurate method for the routeing of LTL shipments via the intermediate terminals.

A heterogeneous fleet liner ship scheduling problem with port time uncertainty
Gürel, Sinan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-12-01)
We deal with a schedule design problem for a heterogeneous fleet liner shipping service under uncertain waiting and handling times at ports. In a liner shipping service, longer than expected waiting and handling times at a port may cause a delay from scheduled departure time. We consider the problem to find the departure times at ports and sailing times of ships between ports so that the total fuel burn is minimized while targeted overall service level (a performance measure based on on-time departure proba...
A Lagrangean relaxation based approach for the capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems
ÖZPEYNİRCİ, SELİN; Azizoğlu, Meral (Informa UK Limited, 2010-05-01)
This study considers the operation assignment and capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems. A set of operations is selected to be processed and assigned to the machines together with their required tools. The purchase or usage of the required tools incurs a cost. The machines have scarce time and tool magazine capacities. The objective is to maximize the total weight of the assigned operations minus the total tooling costs. We use Lagrangean relaxation approach to obtain upper and lower...
Heuristics for multi-item two-echelon spare parts inventory control subject to aggregate and individual service measures
Topan, Engin; Bayındır, Zeynep Pelin; Tan, Tarkan (Elsevier BV, 2017-01-01)
We consider a multi-item two-echelon spare parts inventory system in which the central warehouse operates under a (Q, R) policy and local warehouses implement (S-1,S) policy. The objective is to find the policy parameters minimizing expected system-wide inventory holding and fixed ordering subject to aggregate and individual response time constraints. Using an exact evaluation we provide a very efficient and effective heuristic, and also a tight lower bound for real-world, large-scale two-echelon spare part...
A deterministic inventory/production model with general inventory cost rate function and piecewise linear concave production costs
Bayındır, Zeynep Pelin; Frenk, J. B. G. (Elsevier BV, 2007-05-16)
We present a thorough analysis of the economic production quantity model with shortages under a general inventory cost rate function and piecewise linear concave production costs. Consequently, an effective solution procedure, particularly useful for an approximation scheme, is proposed. A computational study is appended to illustrate the performance of the proposed solution procedure.
A new approximate evaluation method for two-echelon inventory systems with emergency shipments
Oezkan, Erhun; VAN HOUTUM, Geert-Jan; Serin, Yaşar Yasemin (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-01-01)
We consider the inventory control of repairable spare parts in a network consisting of a central warehouse, a central repair facility, and multiple local warehouses. Demands for spare parts occur at the local warehouses. If a local warehouse is out of stock, then an arriving demand is satisfied by an emergency shipment from the central warehouse or the central repair facility. Such emergency shipments are common practice for networks that support technical systems with high downtime costs. We develop a new ...
