NAMIDANCE tsunami simulation and visualization tool is used to create tsunami inundation maps showing quantitative maximum tsunami flow depths in Fethiye. The risk of an extreme, but likely earthquake-generated tsunami is estimated at Fethiye Bay for 14 probabilistic earthquake scenarios. The bay is located 36A degrees 39'5aEuro(3)N 29A degrees 7'23aEuro(3)E, southwestern Turkey, which has coastline to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The tsunami simulation and inundation assessment are performed in three stages: (1) formation of a digital elevation model of the region from the best available topography/bathymetry dataset, (2) estimation of a maximum credible tsunami scenario for the region and determination of related earthquake parameters, (3) high resolution tsunami simulation and computation of near shore and overland tsunami dynamics in the study area using tsunami simulation and visualization code NAMIDANCE, (4) determination of spatial distributions of tsunami characteristics (maximum water elevations, water velocities, flow depths) under the critical tsunami condition. The results are based on the most recent descriptions of potential tsunami sources, topographic and bathymetric databases, and tsunami numerical models. We present an innovative study concentrating on preparation of quantitative flow depths and inundation maps with a very high-resolution bathymetry/topographic dataset in the eastern Mediterranean. Inundation maps will be used to analyze the effects of possible tsunamis. The presented research is crucial to raising the awareness of government officials, the public, and other stake holders about the high probability of a tsunami event in Turkey. Moreover, the results of this study will help to plan for evacuation routes, establish safe zones, and assist in preparation for the tsunami, creating public awareness, and planning evacuation routes before the actual tsunami event happens.

A New Tool for Inundation Modeling: Community Modeling Interface for Tsunamis (ComMIT)
Titov, V. V.; Moore, C. W.; Greenslade, D. J. M.; Pattiaratchi, C.; Badal, R.; Synolakis, C. E.; Kanoğlu, Utku (2011-11-01)
Almost 5 years after the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tragedy, the 10 August 2009 Andaman tsunami demonstrated that accurate forecasting is possible using the tsunami community modeling tool Community Model Interface for Tsunamis (ComMIT). ComMIT is designed for ease of use, and allows dissemination of results to the community while addressing concerns associated with proprietary issues of bathymetry and topography. It uses initial conditions from a precomputed propagation database, has an easy-to-interpre...
Development of MOST for Real-Time Tsunami Forecasting
Titov, Vasily; Kanoğlu, Utku; Synolakis, Costas (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2016-11-01)
The development, testing, and implementation of a real-time tsunami forecast model, the method of splitting tsunami (MOST), is described. MOST is now used as an operational forecast model for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Tsunami Warning System, and as a tsunami hazard assessment tool in the United States and in many countries around the world. Every step in the development of MOST marked new scientific challenges, improvements of technological and computational capabilities, and new...
DEVELOPMENT OF STRENGTH REDUCTION FACTORS FOR PERFORMANCE-BASED SEISMIC DESIGN OF BRIDGES IN FAR-FAULT SEISMIC REGIONS
Rabaia, Tareq Z. S.; Dicleli, Murat; Department of Engineering Sciences (2021-9)
In this thesis, a methodology to develop strength reduction factors for performance-based seismic design of bridges in far-fault seismic regions is presented. The presented methodology is mainly based on performing linear 5%-damped response spectrum analyses (RSA) and nonlinear time history analyses (NTHA) of bridge piers modeled as single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. Bridge piers of both circular and rectangular sections are analyzed for wide ranges of various design parameters considering several sub...
Preliminary estimation of the tsunami hazards associated with the Makran subduction zone at the northwestern Indian Ocean
Heidarzadeh, Mohammad; Pirooz, Moharram D.; Zaker, Nasser H.; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2009-02-01)
We present a preliminary estimation of tsunami hazard associated with the Makran subduction zone (MSZ) at the northwestern Indian Ocean. Makran is one of the two main tsunamigenic zones in the Indian Ocean, which has produced some tsunamis in the past. Northwestern Indian Ocean remains one of the least studied regions in the world in terms of tsunami hazard assessment. Hence, a scenario-based method is employed to provide an estimation of tsunami hazard in this region for the first time. The numerical model...
An evaluation of the 2019 seismic hazard map of Turkey on the basis of spectrum intensity
Akansel, Vesile Hatun; Soysal, Berat Feyza; Kadaş, Koray; Gülkan, Hakkı Polat (null; 2019-10-11)
Seismic hazard maps show the distribution of expected earthquake shaking levels that have a specific probability of occurrence for a region, and provide input for engineers to design structures that will withstand earthquake ground shaking. The 2019 Turkish Building Earthquake Regulation relies on an updated seismic hazard map that considers new source models and more recent ground motion prediction equations. The effect of the change in seismic hazard map that will directly affect the code-based seismic de...
