Tunable dual-frequency RF MEMS rectangular slot ring antenna

This paper presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of a novel, tunable, dual frequency rectangular slot antenna using RF MEMS technology. The antenna tuning is achieved by electrostatically actuated RF MEMS variable capacitors on a stub. Two different capacitor structures are implemented on the antenna: cantilever type and fixed-fixed beam type. The latter one is not sensitive to the stress on the structural layer and its measurement results agree well with the simulation results. Each antenna is fabricated monolithically using an in-house surface micromachining RF MEMS process on a 500-mu m thick glass substrate and occupies an area of about 21 mm x 18 mm. The measurement results show that the antenna resonant frequency can be tuned in a 1 GHz range in the X-band.

Tunable frequency microstrip antennas by rf-mems technology
Erdil, Emre; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
This thesis presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of tunable frequency microstrip antennas using RF MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology. The integration of RF MEMS components with radiators enable to implement tunable systems due to the adjustable characteristics of RF MEMS components. In the frame of this thesis, different types of structures have been investigated and designed. The first structure consists of a microstrip patch antenna which is loaded with a microstrip stub whose ...

Poly(4,7-di(2,3)-dihydrothienol[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl-benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole) (PBDT) and poly(4,7-di(2,3)-dihydrothienol[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl-2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole) (PESeE) were electrochemically deposited on graphite electrodes and used as immobilization matrices for biosensing studies. After electrochemical deposition of the polymeric matrices, glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on the modified electrodes as the model enzyme. In the biosensing studies, the decrease in oxygen level as a result of...
Symmetrical and decoupled nickel microgyroscope on insulating substrate
Alper, Se; Akın, Tayfun (Elsevier BV, 2004-09-21)
This paper presents a symmetrical and decoupled surface micromachined gyroscope fabricated by electroforming thick nickel on a glass substrate. The symmetric structure allows matched resonant frequencies for the drive and sense vibration modes for improved sensitivity, while the decoupled drive and sense oscillation modes prevents unstable operation due to mechanical coupling, resulting in a low zero-rate output drift. The use of a glass substrate instead of a silicon substrate reduces noise due to the para...

This paper presents high performance, GaN/InGaN-based light emitting diodes (LEDs) in three different device configurations, namely Top Emitting (TE) LED, conventional Flip Chip (FC) and Distributed Contact (DC) FC. Series resistances as low as 1.1 Omega have been obtained from FC device configurations with a back reflecting ohmic contact of Ni/Au/RTA/Ni/Ag metal stack. A small shift has been observed between electroluminescence (EL) emissions of TE LED and the FC LEDs. In addition, FWHM value of the EL emi...
Hybrid connection of RF MEMS and SMT components in an impedance tuner
Unlu, Mehmet; Topalli, Kagan; Atasoy, Halil Ibrahim; Demir, Şimşek; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Akın, Tayfun (Elsevier BV, 2010-01-01)
This paper presents a systematic construction of a model for a hybrid connected RF MEMS and SMT components in a reconfigurable impedance tuner. The double stub hybrid impedance tuner which employs a high number of MEMS switches is selected to demonstrate the feasibility of the connections. In the hybrid tuner, MEMS switches are actuated with DC bias signals, where SMT resistors de-couple RF from the DC lines. The hybrid tuner is realized in two steps, where the MEMS impedance tuner is fabricated on a glass ...
