Development of Hydrogen Separation Membrane in Palladium Based Ternary Systems
Köse, Mehmet Mert; Öztürk, Tayfur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-1-25)
A study was carried out into dense metallic membranes for hydrogen separation. Two palladium-based system were characterized Pd-Mn-Ag and Pd-Co-Ni. Membranes were produced via sputter deposition in combinatorial geometry. For this purpose, sputter targets were arranged in triangular manner, and there were total of 21 substrates just above the targets. Membranes were screened via resistivity measurements under argon and hydrogen carried out up to 450 oC. A reactivity index defined as resistivity under hydrog...
Active vibration control of smart structures
Ülker, Demet Fatma; Yaman, Yavuz; Nalbantoğlu, Volkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2003)
The purpose of this thesis was to design controllers by using H^ and yn control strategies in order to suppress the free and forced vibrations of smart structures. The smart structures analyzed in this study were the smart beam and the smart fin. They were aluminum passive structures with surface bonded PZT (Lead-Zirconate-Titanate) patches. The structures were considered in clamped-free configuration. The first part of this study focused on the identification of nominal system models of the smart structure...
DEVELOPMENT OF STRENGTH REDUCTION FACTORS FOR PERFORMANCE-BASED SEISMIC DESIGN OF BRIDGES IN FAR-FAULT SEISMIC REGIONS
Rabaia, Tareq Z. S.; Dicleli, Murat; Department of Engineering Sciences (2021-9)
In this thesis, a methodology to develop strength reduction factors for performance-based seismic design of bridges in far-fault seismic regions is presented. The presented methodology is mainly based on performing linear 5%-damped response spectrum analyses (RSA) and nonlinear time history analyses (NTHA) of bridge piers modeled as single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. Bridge piers of both circular and rectangular sections are analyzed for wide ranges of various design parameters considering several sub...
Development of carbon fabric-reinforced polylactic acid/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene multilayer composites
Öztürk, İrem; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2021-8)
Multilayer composites are in concern of both world of material science and the industry because of providing enhanced mechanical properties with ultra lightweight. Also, there is a growing demand to use of recyclable, biodegradable materials in polymer composites for the sake of environmental health. In this study, polymer blends were prepared with polylactic acid (PLA) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) with 10, 30, and 50 wt.%. To compatibilize these polymers, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene ter...
Optimization of nickel, cobalt and lithium recovery processes from spent li-ion batteries
Tekmanlı, Fırat; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-12-28)
Since lithium-ion batteries are standard in electric vehicles and electrical devices and have the potential to be used widely in the future, it is essential to recycle end-of-life batteries. Waste lithium-ion batteries are harmful to the environment and human health and should be recycled also due to their critical metals. Lithium-ion batteries can be classified according to their cathode chemistry. In this thesis, the recycling of lithium-ion batteries with NMC-type (Nickel- Manganese-Cobalt) cathode chemi...
