METU Faculty of Architecture has attempted a new program in courses Arch. 431 and 432 in 1976. The courses have been accellerated, and the students have been directed towards daily and practical problems. One of the studies undertaken was on the reflection of function on the form of the structure directed towards the METU warehouses. The students within the conduct of the class and the time limitations have consulted and recorded the views and needs of people concerned and developed proposals at a scale of 1:200. Among the projects two feasible ones have been selected, and criticism on form and function, modulation circulation, closed and open spaces, their balance and sufficiency, expansion possibilities and supervision facilities was carried out. Due to the imposed constraints of the course, the roofs of these proposals had been shallow thin shells. Such kind of shells require theoretical and model studies for their structural solutions. This paper is an attempt to solve shallow shells of variable radii or curvature; where the surface is defined by an equation. This paper which deals with roof structural probleme only, intends also to expose attempts of economy in materials, tends to shift engineering problems to higher levels of sophistications in analysis. However* when repetition of the shallow shell elements are intended, theoretical and model studies may yield economical elements, which would extend their fields of use. In the Faculty of Architecture model studies are carried out in parallel to theoretical works.

This paper aims to briefly assess the potentials and limits of online learning environment for studio education by focusing on the case of 2019-20 spring semester studio of Introduction to Architectural Design course at Middle East Technical University’s Department of Architecture. As a transitory course between basic design principles and architectural design, Introduction to Architectural Design addresses the issues of site, program, structure, form, and material in reference to small sca...
Teaching mathematics in architecture
Sorguç, Arzu (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-04-01)
The Department of Architecture of Middle East Technical University offers a course entitled ‘Mathematics in Architecture’ for the third year students. In the beginning of the term, students are forced to imagine themselves as twodimensional creatures living in a two-dimensional space. At this point, fundamentals of architectural geometry are introduced first in the plane, simply by employing the set concept; mapping as a general tool is then introduced and students are asked to use mapping in their design t...
A Conservation Management Plan for Gordion and its Environs
Erder, Evin H.; Guersan-Salzmann, Ayse; Miller, Naomi F. (2013-11-01)
A Conservation Management Plan for Gordion and its Environs has been developed by a multidisciplinary team within a partnership between the University of Pennsylvania (both the School of Design and Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology) and Middle East Technical University (Faculty of Architecture) in Ankara. The project has involved a new approach to the protection of cultural material at the site itself, as well as the survey and documentation of a 140 km2 area, with Gordion as its centre, to include the...
An academic performance measurement system and its impact on quality of engineering faculty work at middle east technical university
Üçtuǧ, Yildirim; Köksal, Gülser (2003-12-01)
A system has been developed for measuring the performance of faculty members at Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1998. This system has been designed to provide feedback for improving the quality of academic work. It involves a separate set of criteria and measures for each college within the university. The criteria used for the College of Engineering include publications, editorial work and translation, professional and other research activities, educational activities, memberships and awards, an...
A Blended learning approach to faculty development in medicine: the Ege University case
Yılmaz, Yusuf; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner; Durak, Halil İbrahim; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2018)
Faculty development programs play an important role in higher education. Within such programs, medical teachers can acquire competencies with regard to facilitating their students’ learning processes. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate blended learning courses for teaching improvement through faculty development programs; and to examine and to describe the participation, satisfaction, and perception of medical teachers toward blended learning. With this aim in mind, four resea...
