Laminated beams fabricated from strips with intermediate adhesive bonding layers are frequently used. The evaluation of the shear and normal stresses in the adhesive layer along the length of the beam is important and both analytical as well as experimental investigations for these stresses have been previously documented. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to compare the analytical shear stress values in the adhesive layer obtained in previous analytical work with those obtained by modelling the laminated beam using finite elements. It is also shown that the analytical approach may be extended to the approximate analysis of coupled twin shear walls.

Elastic layers bonded to flexible reinforcements
Pinarbasi, Seval; Mengi, Yalcin (Elsevier BV, 2008-02-01)
Elastic layers bonded to reinforcing sheets are widely used in many engineering applications. While in most of the earlier applications, these layers are reinforced using steel plates, recent studies propose to replace "rigid" steel reinforcement with "flexible" fiber reinforcement to reduce both the cost and weight of the units/systems. In this study, a new formulation is presented for the analysis of elastic layers bonded to flexible reinforcements under (i) uniform compression, (ii) pure bending and (iii...
Modeling and simulation of oil leakage in radial lip seals
Yıldız, Meltem; Akkök, Metin; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
Radial lip seals are used to prevent leakage between machine elements in many industrial applications. During operation, fluid film between seal lip and shaft surface generates a pressure distribution on the lip which is elastically deformed due to hydrodynamic pressure. Surface roughness parameters in terms of moments of height profile distribution (rms roughness, skewness and kurtosis) affect the rate of oil leakage. A computer program is developed for elastohydrodynamic analysis of radial lip seals. Both...
Production of graded porous polyamide structures and polyamide-epoxy composites via selective laser sintering
Jande, Yusufu A. C.; Erdal Erdoğmuş, Merve; Dağ, Serkan (SAGE Publications, 2014-06-01)
Selective laser sintering was used for producing uniformly porous and graded porous polyamide structures. The porous structures were infiltrated with epoxy to produce composites. The porous and composite specimens were physically and mechanically characterized. Within the capabilities of the selective laser sintering machine and the materials used, porosities in the range 5-29% could be obtained in a controlled, repeatable manner. The ultimate tensile strength of the produced uniformly porous polyamide stru...
Mechanics of dynamic contact of coated substrate and rigid cylindrical ended punch
Balci, Mehmet N.; Dağ, Serkan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-05-01)
The dynamic contact mechanics of isotropic elastic coating bonded to homogeneous substrate was examined. The coating is indented by a sliding rigid punch of a cylindrical profile. The rigid punch moves over the coating at a steady subsonic speed. To determine contact stresses, an analytical method based on the singular integral equation technique is put forward. Governing partial differential equations are derived considering general theory of elastodynamics. The influences of dimensionless punch speed, mas...
Ideal Location of Intermediate Ring Stiffeners on Discretely Supported Cylindrical Shells
Topkaya, Cem (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2014-04-01)
Silos in the form of a cylindrical metal shell are commonly elevated to provide access to the space beneath, permitting the contained materials to be directly discharged. A few discrete column supports at evenly spaced intervals are commonly used. However, the structural design of discretely supported cylindrical shells presents a variety of challenges. The presence of discrete supports results in circumferential nonuniformity in the axial compressive stress as well as a progressive vertical decay above the...
