It has been more than a decade that the first discussions on the integration of computational technologies into architectural education, especially into the design studios have been started. Since then, the use of CAD from drafting to complex solid modeling and manufacturing in design studios has been mostly achieved. Yet, persisting on the discussions within the same context, mostly focusing on the studio education and CAD/CAM rather than "CAAD" avoids inquiring other potentials of them as being a learning and implementation media of different knowledge domains. In this context this papers presents a discussion on andragogic learning by the integration of simulation technologies to architectural education to synthesize the fragmented knowledge that provides new learning media.

Learning by doing in the age of design computation
Oezkar, Mine (2007-01-01)
A design teaching approach of integrating the notions of design thinking and computing in the first year of architectural design education is introduced and discussed. The approach aims to enhance and bring up-to-date the educational practice of "learning by doing" in the first year foundations curriculum. In the studied example, the analytical phases of thinking in a simple design task are systematically and visually recorded. This documentation is incorporated to the design process as a means for the stud...
Analogical Models In Architecture And Urban Design
Abel, Chris (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 1988)
In an earlier article, "Function of Tacit Knowing in Learning to Design!' (Abel, 1981c), I suggested that design researchers need to pay more attention to the way architects actually create their designs, rather than relying on the idealized models of design processes dreamed up by themselves. This article is intended to help fill that need, and outlines the major types of analogical models used by architects, together with some straightforward explanations of the main concepts involved. The assumptive phil...
Computational design learning: the smartgeometry case
Acıcan, Öykü; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2019)
Computational design has brought in novel concepts to architecture and design disciplines by an integration of interdisciplinary knowledge, tools and methods. Computational design learning has entered the curriculum of architecture, and gained significance over time. Experiential learning environments such as computational design workshops offer strategies for a better understanding of the contemporary needs of computational design learning. Smartgeometry (SG) is a computational design organization that ope...
Pioneers of the Next Generation Sustainability Strategies in the Built Environments: Robotics in Architecture
Bostancı Sabur, Hafize Büşra (2019-12-01)
The discussions on “sustainability in architecture” that shapes policies and practices by seeking less footprints in the ecosystem, and “computational technologies” that forces all design disciplines re- think each phase from initial design to end product as well as in the realm of architecture are two important subjects of this century. Environmental problems have become a reality that should be discussed at many levels and the solutions are being tried to be produced. Factors such as i...
Prototypes in Architectural Education: As Instruments of Integration in the Digital Era
Özsel Akipek, Fulya ; Kozikoğlu, Nilüfer (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2007-6-01)
Architectural design and education today has a strong new focus on process, material and data organizations with the conceptual background of emergence and complexity of the digital era. In this paper, we reevaluate the design as research, and distinguish the digital and conceptual modes of prototypes in dialogue with the material prototypes. Through four instances in our current educational experience, we review this dialogue and the field of potentialities that exist in the interrelation of the different ...
