This paper presents a fully-integrated lab-on-a-chip (LOC) system for label-free detection and real-time counting of dielectrophoretically trapped multidrug resistant (MDR) K562 cells. The system integrates a parylene-based microfluidic DEP channel on top of a CMOS image sensor for the first time in the literature. The DEP channel can trap MDR K562 cells with 9 V-pp and 10 mu l/min flow rate, and the CMOS image sensor can detect the trapped cells as small as 3 mu m in diameter with a noise level of 28.3 e(-)rms.

ANDROID BASED PORTABLE CELL COUNTING SYSTEM FOR LABEL FREE QUANTIFICATION OF DEP MANIPULATED CANCER CELLS
Aslan, Mahmut Kamil; Külah, Haluk (2017-06-22)
This paper presents a portable system integrating microfluidic dielectrophoresis (DEP) channel with a CMOS imager for label and lens free detection, and real-time counting of MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The DEP device is designed for trapping the MCF-7 that can simultaneously be imaged using a CMOS sensor. An android application is employed in order to record raw CMOS images. Cells are detected and counted using inbuilt image processing operations of the same application. Average counting accuracy of the sys...
Dielectrophoretic detection of imatinib resistance in K562 Cells Using A lab-on-a-chip system
Demircan Yalçın, Yağmur; Toral, Taylan Berkın; Sukaş, Serkan; Yıldırım, Ender; Zorlu, Özge; Gündüz, Ufuk; Külah, Haluk (Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society (CBMS); 2019-10-27)
This study presents label-free detection of imatinib resistance in K562 cells via integrated dielectrophoretic detection and impedimetric counting on a lab-on-a-chip system. Two impedimetric counting units were placed upstream and downstream of dielectrophoretic detection unit to obtain differential cell count and consequently the trapping ratio. The trapping ratio up to 57% was achieved for imatinib resistant (~60-fold) K562 cells, while it was minimized to 20% for wild type K562 cells
Detection of imatinib resistance in K562 leukemia cells by 3D-electrode contactless dielectrophoresis
Demircan, Y.; Koyuncuoglu, A.; Erdem, Murat; Ozgur, E.; Gündüz, Ufuk; Külah, Haluk (2013-12-01)
This paper presents the trapping of imatinib resistant K562 (human chronic myelogenic leukemia (CML), K562/IMA) cells with 3D-electrode contactless dielectrophoresis (DEP). 3D electrodes are isolated from the solution by means of uniform thin parylene layer (~0.3μm), to eliminate the Joule heating, electrolysis, and cell damaging. 3D electrodes (extruded along the microchannel in z-axis) provide uniform distribution of DEP force along the channel height, improving the separation efficiency, significantly. I...
Characterisation and mitigation of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the 2011 proton-proton run
Aad, G.; et. al. (IOP Publishing, 2013-07-01)
This paper presents a summary of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector and discusses methods to tag and remove background contaminated events in data. Trigger-rate based monitoring of beam-related backgrounds is presented. The correlations of backgrounds with machine conditions, such as residual pressure in the beam-pipe, are discussed. Results from dedicated beam-background simulations are shown, and their qualitative agreement with data is evaluated. Data taken during the passage of unpa...
Label-Free DNA Detection Using a Charge Sensitive CMOS Microarray Sensor Chip
Musayev, Javid; Adlguzel, Yekbun; KÜLAH, HALUK; Eminoglu, Selim; Akın, Tayfun (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2014-05-01)
This paper presents label-free DNA detection using a charge sensitive microarray sensor. The microarray sensor, fabricated with a standard CMOS process, contains 1024 detector elements integrated together with their readout circuit in a single chip. This microarray sensor chip is developed for biosensing applications involving label-free detection of charged particles and molecules with improved sensitivity. The proposed chip is used for the detection of DNA immobilization and hybridization by directly sens...
