Futile negotiation processes over water allocation and related disputes over water rights in the Euphrates-Tigris river basin demonstrate that there is a need to create new cooperative frameworks that enable links between cooperation and development. Hence, this chapter commences with the description of the origins and the evolution of the dispute in the region. There are discussions on the merits of the principle of 'equitable utilization' and I the needs-based approach' with a specific reference to the Three Stage Plan of Turkey. After analyzing the limitations and shortcomings of existing water allocation mechanisms a more workable solution of 'sharing the benefits rather than sharing the water itself' is put forward. The joint Technical Committee meetings are reviewed, suggesting the broadening of its agenda.

Impact of Atatürk dam on social and environmental aspects of the southeastern Anatolia project
Akyürek, Gökçe; Altınbilek, Doğan H.; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In this thesis the impact of the Atatürk Dam on social and environmental aspects of the Southeastern Anatolia Project has been discussed in terms of planning and policy making, institutional arrangements, infrastuctural development and human resources development. In order to analyse the impacts of Atatürk Dam data related to several components are collected. These components can be listed as resettlement, land acquisition and land consolidation, education, health, gender issues. The results show that the A...
ANALYZING THE COMBINED IMPACT OF CLIMATE AND LAND USE LAND COVER CHANGE ON THE HYDROLOGICAL RESPONSE OF JHELUM RIVER BASIN IN KASHMIR
Hamid, Injila; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2022-7)
In terms of efficient and sustainable management of water resources of a basin, land use land cover (LULC) and climate change impact studies hold utmost importance. Land use change dynamics along with the climate change owing to greenhouse gas emissions are altering the hydrological response of river basins. This study therefore focuses on quantifying the combined impact of LULC and climate change on the water balance components of the Jhelum river basin using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrologi...
Compliance mechanisms under multilateral environmental agreements a comparative analysis of Montreal and Kyoto protocols
Savaşan, Zerrin; Güneş, Şule Anlar; Department of International Relations (2013)
The main aim of this study is to make a detailed examination on one of the fundamental concerns of global environmental governance, compliance issue, within the context of the compliance mechanisms (CMs) created under the multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). In this respect, in the study, it is basicly scrutinized what the role of the CMs is in ensuring better compliance of the parties with their commitments under the MEAs. In the framework of this examination, a comparative analysis is made betwee...
Sustainable development and management of an aquifer system in western Turkey
SAKIYAN, J; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2004-02-01)
This study presents the establishment of sustainable development and management policies for the Kucuk Menderes River Basin aquifer system in western Turkey. Geological, hydrogeological, and geophysical data are used conjunctively to define various hydrogeological units and their geometry. Distributions of hydraulic-parameter values and recharge are estimated by geostatistical methods and hydrologic simulations, respectively. A finite-difference groundwater flow model is used to represent the unconfined flo...
Advances in integration of energy, water and environment systems towards climate neutrality for sustainable development
Kılkış, Şiir; Krajacic, Goran; Duic, Neven; Rosen, Marc A.; Al-Nimr, Moh'd Ahmad (2020-12-01)
The integration of energy, water and environment systems represents important opportunities for addressing the urgent imperative of climate neutrality. The 29 original papers in the virtual special issue of the 14th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems exemplify multiple advances in integrated approaches. This editorial provides a review of recent scientific contributions in energy system integration, urban synergies in the energy transition, integration of energy a...
