ENERGY PORTRAIT OF TURKEY - ACHIEVABLE SAVINGS THROUGH RENEWABLE ENERGIES AND CONSERVATION TECHNOLOGIES

1993-07-01
TASDEMIROGLU, E
This article begins with a brief review of the socioeconomic situation, energy resources, and energy consumptions in Turkey. The estimates for the sustainability years of fossil fuels and the potential of renewable energies are given. Hydropower, biomass, geothermal, solar, wind, wave, sea currents, and salt gradient are, in order of priority, listed among the renewable energy resources of the country. The importance of energy conservation is discussed in conjunction with the research results produced for the conditions of the country. For the reference year 1989, potentials for energy savings are estimated in the residental, industrial, transport, and power sectors. The validity of the findings is discussed. Air pollution levels due to fossil-fuel consumption are pointed out. In this context, the role of renewables is indicated. The economics of solar and biogas heating systems are reviewed. The article concludes with a discussion of research gaps in national energy planning. Exploitation and management of indigenous fossil fuels, efficient utilization of energy, application of renewable energy systems, and implementation of environmental regulations are listed among the main topics.

Forecasting Nigeria's energy use by 2030, an econometric approach
Asumadu-Sarkodie, Samuel; Owusu, Phebe Asantewaa (Informa UK Limited, 2016-01-01)
The study examines the causal nexus between energy use, environmental pollution, GDP per capita, and urbanization in order to forecast Nigeria's energy use by 2030. Employing a time-series data spanning from 1971 to 2012, a linear regression analysis is used to examine the causal relationship among the study variables and subsequently forecasted Nigeria's energy use with the ARIMA and ETS models. Evidence from the study shows that a 1% increase in energy use increases carbon dioxide emissions by 3%, while a...
Sustainable development of Turkey: Deployment of geothermal resources for carbon capture, utilization, and storage
Kirli, Mustafa Safa; Fahrioglu, Murat (Informa UK Limited, 2019-07-18)
As a developing country, Turkey's sustainable development objectives converge on robust and sustainable economic development. The increase in its energy and electricity demand is attributed to the growth of population, urbanization, and industrialization parallel to economic and social growth. Instead of fulfilling the obligation to protect the environment arising from international agreements and achieving desired sustainable development, the dependency on imported fossil fuel in electrical energy producti...
Steam Reforming of ethanol over sol-gel-synthesized mixed oxide catalysts
Olcay, Hakan Önder; Üner, Deniz; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
Depletion in the reserves of fossil fuels, inefficient energy production from these fuels and the negative effect of their usage on atmosphere, and thereby, on human health have accelerated researches on clean energy. Hydrogen produced from ethanol when used in fuel cells not only generates efficient energy but also creates a closed carbon cycle in nature. ZnO and Cu/ZnO catalysts are known with their superior performance in alcohol synthesis. From the principle of microkinetic reversibility they are expect...
Artificial neural network modeling for forecasting gas consumption
Gorucu, FB; Geris, PU; Gumrah, F (Informa UK Limited, 2004-02-01)
This study includes an approach to evaluate and forecast gas consumption by Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling for the capital city of Ankara, Turkey. ANN models have been trained to perform complex functions in various fields of application including the forecasting process. The process of the study is examining the factors affecting the output and training the ANNs to decide the optimum parameters to be used in forecasting the gas consumption for the remaining days of 2002 and the year 2005. During ...
Geothermal Energy: Current Status in Turkey with EU Perspective
Vardar Acar, Ceren (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
The world's growing energy demands carry the energy into an important stage. Crude oil will be able to supply increasing demand until peak world production is reached. Forecasts show that this peak time is about 2020. Turkey and the world will deplete economically recoverable fossil resources by the end of the 21st century. The energy gap caused by declining fossil resources has to be filled by expanding production of other sources. Geothermal energy is one of the most important options for filling this gap...
