Effect of synthesis parameters on the surface morphology of conducting polypyrrole films

Kaynak, A
Surface morphology of polypyrrole films was investigated by using atomic force and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Synthesis parameters such as dopant concentration and synthesis time and subsequent heat treatment were found to affect the surface morphology of electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole films. Mean height, root-mean-square roughness, and nodule diameter increased with increasing dopant concentration and synthesis time. Lightly doped, semiconducting films had smoother surface morphology with the mean height values as low as 500 Angstrom, whereas highly doped conducting films had dendritic surfaces with the mean height values of the nodules reaching several microns. At highest dopant concentrations and/or synthesis times exceeding 2 hours the film surface no longer resembled cauliflowers but a worm-like fibrillar morphology appeared. Fibrils started growing at a dopant concentration of 0.025 M and at 0.05 M the film surface was covered with fibrils with pointed tips. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Effect of irradiation damage on the shear strength of Cu-Nb interfaces
MAO, Shimin; Özerinç, Sezer; King, William P.; Averback, Robert S.; Dillon, Shen J. (2014-11-01)
The influence of irradiation-induced damage on the interfacial shear strength of Cu-Nb interfaces was characterized via compression of nanolaminate pillars performed in situ in a transmission electron microscope. Chemical mixing and interfacial roughening during MeV Kr ion irradiation leads to increased interfacial shear strength by as much as 60%, from 0.6 GPa for the as-deposited material to 0.95 GPa for samples irradiated at liquid nitrogen temperature. The increase in interfacial shear strength was most...
Real-time scanning hall probe microscopy
Oral, Ahmet; HENİNİ, M (1996-08-26)
We describe a low-noise scanning Hall probe microscope having unprecedented magnetic field sensitivity (similar to 2.9x10(-8) T/root Hz at 77 K), high spatial resolution, (similar to 0.85 mu m),nd operating in real-time (similar to 1 frame/s) for studying flux profiles at surfaces. A submicron Hall probe manufactured in a GaAs/A1GaAs two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is scanned over the sample to measure the surface magnetic fields using conventional scanning tunneling microscopy positioning techniques. F...
Quantitative atom-resolved force gradient imaging using noncontact atomic force microscopy
Oral, Ahmet; ÖZER, HAKAN ÖZGÜR; HOFFMANN, PM; PETHICA, JB (2001-09-17)
Quantitative force gradient images are obtained using a sub-angstrom amplitude, off-resonance lever oscillation method during scanning tunneling microscopy imaging. We report the direct observation of short-range bonds, and the measured short-range force interaction agrees well in magnitude and length scale with theoretical predictions for single bonds. Atomic resolution is shown to be associated with the presence of a prominent short-range contribution to the total force interaction. It is shown that the b...
Electron-phonon scattering in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes

Electron scattering rates in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied using an atomic force microscope as an electrical probe. From the scaling of the resistance of the same nanotube with length in the low- and high-bias regimes, the mean-free paths for both regimes are inferred. The observed scattering rates are consistent with calculations for acoustic-phonon scattering at low biases and zone boundary/optical phonon scattering at high biases.
Variation of mechanical properties of TiO2 during Li insertion
Lindstrom, Henrik; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Kamei, Masayuki; Kagawa, Yutaka (The Electrochemical Society, 2007-01-01)
TiO2 films were produced by low-temperature reactive magnetron sputtering and characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemistry, and mechanical-indentation techniques. The TiO2 films consisted of 20-30 nm particles. Electrochemical Li-insertion experiments revealed that the Li diffusion along grain boundaries was much faster compared to the diffusion into the TiO2 grains. The mechanical properties of the films changed drastically after electrochemica...
