This study covers the preparation and characterization of perlite-filled polypropylene (PP). The compositions of 15, 30, and 50 % by weight perlite-PP composites were prepared by melt-mixing. The PP used in this study was either applied in the virgin form or gamma -irradiated in air at the doses of 10, 25, 50, and 100 kGy to determine the effect of oxidative degradation in composite properties. Furthermore, the active sites containing oxygen produced by gamma -irradiation in PP may provide a possible enhancement by the interfacial interaction between perlite and PP. An initial sharp drop in torque readings during the melt-mixing of perlite-PP composite preparation indicated an extensive chain scission and degradation by gamma -irradiation. The thermal properties of the composites were characterized by DSC. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation and also impact strength decreased in all composites with gamma -irradiation. Yet, these changes appeared not to be faster than was the change in unfilled PP upon irradiation. Scanning electron microscopy revealed an interfacial adhesion between perlite and irradiated PP while virgin PP did not show any evidence of adhesion. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Poly(methylsilyne) and Investigation of the Effects of Parameters on the Synthesis
EROĞLU PALA, DAMLA; Nur, Yusuf; Bayram, Göknur; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Wiley, 2010-12-05)
This study aims to synthesize poly(methylsilyne) by electrochemical reduction of methyltrichlorosilane at a constant potential of -6 V, while investigating the effects of parameters such as the nature of the electrode, solvent and supporting electrolyte, the monomer/solvent ratio, and the reaction time on the properties of the products. The polymer was characterized by H-1-NMR (Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), UV-Visible Spectroscopy, and TGA (...
Investigation of pi-pi Interactions between TNT and (R)-Hexahelicene
Celik Bayar, Caglar; Türker, Burhan Lemi (Informa UK Limited, 2020-08-01)
The detection of an energetic molecule TNT is an important issue especially in military applications and as a result many of the studies focused on this subject in the literature. In this study, except from the literature, the possible interactions between TNT and polycyclic aromatic chiral compound (R)-Hexahelicene were examined theoretically in terms of non-covalent pi-pi interactions, theoretically. It was observed that (R)-Hexahelicene had such interactions with TNT via the 2nd and 3rd six-membered ring...
Fine tuning of color via copolymerization and its electrochromic device application
ÇAMURLU, PINAR; Sahmetlioglu, Ertugrul; Sahin, Elif; Akhmedov, Idris Mecidoglu; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2008-04-30)
In this study electrochemical copolymerization of 1-(perfluorophenyl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene was used to fulfill a strategy in achieving desired multichromic properties. The resultant polymer displayed distinct color changes between red-violet, amber, green and blue color with good switching times and optical contrast. A direct correlation between the color of the polymer in neutral state and the applied potential during synthesis was observed. Hence, it was possible...
Characterization of different double-emulsion formulations based on food-grade emulsifiers and stabilizers
PULATSU, Ezgi Tekin; Şahin, Serpil; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm (Informa UK Limited, 2018-01-01)
This study focused on the preparation and characterization of water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2)-type double emulsions designed by food-grade emulsifiers and stabilizers. The primary objective of this study was to compare different emulsion formulations in terms of droplet size, rheology, and stability and to reduce the amount of polyglycerol poliricinoleate (PGPR). To achieve these goals, PGPR and a PGPR-lecithin blend were utilized in the formation of the primary phase (W1/O), while varying concentrations of...
Effect of preparation parameters on performance of dense homogeneous polycarbonate gas separation membranes
Hacarlioglu, P; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yılmaz, Levent (Wiley, 2003-10-17)
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of preparation parameters on the membrane permeation mechanism and separation performances of dense homogeneous poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) membranes. Blade-casting and drop-casting techniques are used for casting films from solutions with varying concentrations. Chloroform and methylene chloride are used to determine the effect of the properties of the casting solvent. Permeation measurements are done with Ar, N-2, O-2, CH4, CO2, and H, gases. The selec...
