This study is aimed to remove Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption. As adsorbent, activated carbon prepared from olive stone, an agricultural solid by-product was used. Different activating agent (ZnCl2) amounts and adsorbent particle size were studied to optimize adsorbent surface area. The adsorption experiments were conducted at different parameters such as, adsorbent dose, temperature, equilibrium time and pH. According to the experiments results, the equilibrium time, optimum pH, adsorbent dosage were found 60 min, pH > 6 and 1.0 g/50 ml respectively. The kinetic data supports pseudo-second order model and intra-particle model but shows very poor fit for pseudo-first order model. Adsorption isotherms were obtained from three different temperatures. These adsorption data were fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters, standard free energy (Delta G(0)), standard enthalpy (Delta H-0), standard entropy (Delta S-0) of the adsorption process were calculated. To reveal the adsorptive characteristics of the produced active carbon, BET surface area measurements were made. Structural analysis was performed using SEM-EDS. The resulting activated carbons with 20% ZnCl2 solution was the best sample of the produced activated carbons from olive stone with the specific surface area of 790.25 m(2) g(-1). The results show that the produced activated carbon from olive stone is an alternative low-cost adsorbent for removing Cd(II).

Sorption of BB41 dye molecules using chitosan based particles from aqueous solutions: A kinetic and thermodynamic evaluation
Demirtas, Hulya; Tasar, Seyda; Kaya, Fatih; Ozer, Ahmet (2022-08-01)
In this study, starting from chitosan is a hydrophilic polymer with positively charged, it was aimed to produce chitosan-based particles and to be evaluated as a sorbent. Chitosan-based polymeric particles production was carried out by the precipitation-collection method from chitosan. Chitosan and chitosan-based sorbent were characterized. For this purpose, SEM and FTIR analyzes were used. Sorption activities of the chitosan-based polymeric particles were investigated for basic dye (basic blue 41, BB41). T...
Biosorption of lead(II) ions from aqueous solution by peanut shells: Equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic studies
Tasar, Seyda; Kaya, Fatih; Ozer, Ahmet (2014-06-01)
In this study, the biosorption of Pb(II) ions onto peanut shells from an aqueous solution was studied in a batch system as a function of temperature, pH of the solution, contact time, initial concentration of Pb(II) ions, and peanut shell concentration. It was determined that the biosorption capacity of the peanut shells decreased as the temperature was increased. Several kinetic models were used to determine the biosorption mechanism. It was determined that the biosorption system obeyed the pseudo-second-o...
LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF ACTIVATED CARBON ADSORPTION AND OZONATION TO REMOVE MICROPOLLUTANTS FROM TEXTILE WASTEWATER
Akdeniz, Ayşe Sena; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2022-8-29)
To avoid potential adverse effects by micropollutants in secondary textile wastewater, it is necessary to apply an advanced treatment process, among which activated carbon adsorption and ozone oxidation are the most attractive alternatives. There is still a lack of studies evaluating the environmental impacts of these processes for the tertiary treatment of textile wastewater. Using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, this study assesses and compares the environmental impacts of ozone oxidation and...
Multicomponent ion exchange on zeolite 4A
Kadaifci, Bijen; Yücel, Hayrettin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
In this study binary and ternary ion exchange on Zeolite NaA using silver and cadmium ions were investigated. Ion exchange were conducted at constant temperature (25oC) and normality (0.1N) in a batch system for both binary and ternary experiments. Zeolite weights were varied between 0.1 and 1 g for binary experiments. Thermodynamic analysis of binary ion exchange between Cd2+-Na+ and Ag+-Na+ were examined and thermodynamic equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy were calculated. Thermodynamic equilibriu...
FEM solutions of magnetohydrodynamic and biomagnetic fluid flows in channels
Türk, Önder; Tezer Sezgin, Münevver; Department of Scientific Computing (2014)
In this thesis, solutions to steady and unsteady flow problems of incompressible viscous fluids are obtained numerically. In computational aspects, the primary focus is on the finite element analysis, however, spectral collocation and boundary element methods are also employed. The two-dimensional Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations in stream function-vorticity form are solved by using both finite element method (FEM) and Chebyshev spectral collocation method (CSCM). The accuracy of the FEM and CSCM methodologies...
