Physical properties of Pd, Ni metals and their binary alloys
Özdemir Kart, Sevgi; Tomak, Mehmet; Department of Physics (2004)
The Sutton Chen and quantum Sutton Chen potentials are used in molecular dynamics simulations to describe the structural, thermodynamical, and transport properties of Pd, Ni and their binary alloys in solid, liquid, and glass phases. Static properties including elastic constants, pair distribution function, static structure factor, and dynamical properties consisting of phonon dispersion relation, diffusion coefficient, and viscosity are computed at various temperatures. The melting temperatures for Pd-Ni s...
Physical properties of CdSe thin films produced by thermal evaporation and e-beam techniques
Huş, Şaban Mustafa; Parlak, Mehmet; Department of Physics (2006)
CdSe thin films were deposited by thermal evaporation and e-beam evaporation techniques on to well cleaned glass substrates. Low dose of boron have been implanted on a group of samples. EDAX and X-ray patterns revealed that almost stoichiometric polycrystalline films have been deposited in (002) preferred orientation. An analysis of optical measurements revealed a sharp increase in absorption coefficient below 700 nm and existence of a direct allowed transition. The calculated band gap was around 1.7 eV. Th...

Physical control of the spatial and temporal diversity of microbial mats at a shallow water hydrothermal vent

Shallow-water hydrothermal vents are ubiquitous but poorly studied geothermal environments. The active hydrothermal emissions of the Milos hydrothermal system support complex microbial mats, which are fundamental in engineering the environmental niche in which extremophiles thrive. Because of the shallow depth, the mat community is wiped out during every major storm, when swell and wave action increase, and then it reconstitutes itself over a brief period of time (days). Here we report the results of a join...
