This paper presents an embedded control system course for graduate-student education / research. This course, which is to provide hands-on-experience, employs “lab-at-home” approach where the students are expected to design and implement various embedded control systems at home rather than a formal lab environment. With the utilization of a PC software in which complex systems (such as satellite tracking antenna, automatic washing machine, manipulators, etc) can be simulated realistically in non-real-time, the students have the opportunity to test and debug their control algorithms.

Intelligent learning system for online learning
Serçe, Fatma Cemile; Alpaslan, Ferda Nur; Jain, Lakhmi (2008-10-01)
The paper presents an Adaptive Intelligent Learning System (AILS) designed to be used with any Learning Management System (LMS). The adaptiveness provides uniquely identifying and monitoring the learner's learning process according to the learner's profile. AILS has been implemented as a multi-agent system. The agents were developed as JADE agents. The paper presents the learning model, system components, agent behavior in learner scenarios, the ontologies used in agent communications, and the adaptive stra...
An experimental study for simulation based assessment of information system design performance
Ayyildiz, Bulent; Akman, Ibrahim; Arifoğlu, Ali (2007-07-04)
This paper presents an experimental study for evaluating the decision support value of queueing network (QN) based simulation models for information system design performance. For illustration, queueing network simulation models have been extracted corressponding to three annotated design alternatives of a selected case study. The design alternatives are produced using logical requirements of the selected system. The performance of each alternative is then predicted using quantifiable parameters considering...
Applied supervisory control for a flexible manufacturing system
Moor, Thomas; Schmidt, Klaus Verner; Perk, Sebastian (2010-12-01)
This paper presents a case study in the design and implementation of a discrete event system (DES) of real-world complexity. Our DES plant is a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) laboratory model that consists of 29 interacting components and is controlled via 107 digital signals. Regarding controller design, we apply a hierarchical and decentralised synthesis method from earlier work in order to achieve nonblocking and safe closed-loop behaviour. Regarding implementation, we discuss how digital signals tr...
Intelligent student assessment and coaching interface to web-based education-oriented intelligent experimentation on robot supported laboratory set-ups
Motuk, Halil Erdem; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref; Erkmen, İsmet; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2003)
This thesis presents a framework for an intelligent interface for the access of robotsupported remote laboratories through the Internet. The framework is composed of the student assessment and coaching system, the experimentation scenario, and the associated graphical user interface. Student assessment and coaching system is the main feature of a successful intelligent interface for use during remote experimentation with a robot-supported laboratory setup. The system has a modular structure employing artifi...
Evaluating learning management systems: Adoption of hexagonal e-learning assessment model in higher education
Özkan Yıldırım, Sevgi; Baykal, Nazife (2009-05-29)
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of undertaking a systemic view of learning management systems (LMSs) evaluation addressing the conceptualization and measurement of e-learning systems success in higher education. Design/methodology/approach – The paper adopts a quantitative case perspective and derives a conceptual model for e-learning assessment (Hexagonal e-learning assessment model – HELAM). The model is empirically tested for validity and reliability in the university...
