An Investigation of the Ground Motion Scaling Procedures for the Nonlinear Seismic Analyses of Concrete Gravity Dams
Soysal, BERAT FEYZA; Ay, Bekir Özer; Arıcı, Yalın (2019-07-03)
Seismic assessment of gravity dams is generally carried out using time history analyses. Scaling of the motions is commonly used; however, in contrast to buildings, the performance of scaling procedures at predicting the mean and reducing the dispersion in engineering demand parameters (EDPs) is not known. The main goal of this study is to assess the performance of different scaling procedures in predicting seismic demands on dams. The performance regarding the prediction of the damage and the required numb...
An Experimental study on static and dynamic behaviour of model pile foundations
Ünsever, Yeşim Sema; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
When the subsoil beneath a structure is weak to carry the loads from the superstructure, use of piled foundations is one of the widely employed alternatives. These types of foundations may also be subjected to transient or cyclic lateral loads arising from earthquake, wind, etc. Detailed case histories of dynamically loaded pile foundations are not too many in the literature. In this study, a series of static cyclic horizontal load tests and 1-g shaking table tests on various model foundations, such as pile...
An Investigation on belief propagation decoding of polar codes
Doğan, Orkun; Diker Yücel, Melek; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
Polar codes are provably symmetric capacity achieving codes for any given binary input discrete memoryless channel, with low encoding and decoding complexities. Polar codes introduced by Erdal Arıkan in 2009 are based on the channel polarization. N binary channels are synthesized out of N copies of binary input discrete memoryless channels, such that as N goes to infinity each of the synthesized channel’s capacity goes to either 0 or 1; i.e., the channels are seen purely as noisy or noiseless channels. Thes...
An investigation on sample size distribution in electric discharge machining (EDM)
Darendeliler, Haluk (1991-01-01)
In this study, 150 experiments are conducted at different machining conditions to determine the sample size for workpiece removal rate and tool wear rate with a certain acceptable error in Electric Discharge Machining (EDM). Experimental workpiece removal rate and tool wear rate data are found to be distributed normally with a good fit. Statistically, it is shown that 150 experiments are large enough random sample to reflect the characteristics of the population. Two methods are proposed to find the sample ...
An investigation on the performance optimization of an alkaline fuel cell
Ergul, MT; Turker, L; Eroğlu, İnci (1997-10-01)
A fuel cell test module was designed and constructed to determine the performance of an alkaline fuel cell. The sim was to optimize its performance by changing some of its parameters and to integrate it with a hydrogen photobioreactor in future. The fuel cell was a single cell, hydrogen-oxygen, aqueous electrolyte type. The performance characteristics of the cell have been investigated. The electrodes were multilayer Teflon bonded gas diffusion type and were prepared by the rolling method. Active carbon or ...
