Aqueous multiphase fluids trapped in closed multiwall carbon nanotubes are visualized with high resolution using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hydrothermally synthesized nanotubes have inner diameter of 70 nm and wall thickness 20 nm, on average. The nanotubes are hydrophilic due to oxygen groups attached on their wall surfaces. Segregated liquid inclusions contained in the nanotubes under high pressure can be mobilized by heating. A resistive heating stage is utilized to heat a thin membrane inside a nanotube, causing the membrane to evaporate slowly and eventually pinch off. Focused electron beam heating is employed as a second means of thermal stimulation, which results in localized heating. With the latter method, gas/liquid interface motion is observed inside the thin channel of a carbon nanotube. Experiments like the ones presented herein may help understand the dynamics of fluids contained in nanoscale channels

Electron-phonon scattering in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes
Park, JY; Rosenblatt, S; Yaish, Y; Sazonova, V; Toffoli, Hande; Braig, S; Arias, TA; Brouwer, PW; McEuen, PL (2004-03-01)
Electron scattering rates in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied using an atomic force microscope as an electrical probe. From the scaling of the resistance of the same nanotube with length in the low- and high-bias regimes, the mean-free paths for both regimes are inferred. The observed scattering rates are consistent with calculations for acoustic-phonon scattering at low biases and zone boundary/optical phonon scattering at high biases.
Kinetics and Mechanisms of Isothermal Devitrification in Amorphous Cu50Zr50
Cullinan, Tim; Kalay, Ilkay; Kalay, Yunus Eren; Kramer, Matt; Napolitano, Ralph (2015-02-01)
The crystallization kinetics and microstructural dynamics associated with devitrifying a melt-spun Cu50Zr50 metallic glass were investigated using isothermal treatments, in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction, conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The analysis of isothermal transformations allows us to more clearly unravel the complex interplay between nucleation and growth of competing stable and metastable phases. The isotherma...
Optical characterization of Ga2SeS layered crystals by transmission, reflection and ellipsometry
IŞIK, MEHMET; Hasanlı, Nızamı (2015-07-10)
Optical properties of Ga2SeS crystals grown by Bridgman method were investigated by transmission, reflection and ellipsometry measurements. Analysis of the transmission and reflection measurements performed in the wavelength range of 400-1100 nm at room temperature indicated the presence of indirect and direct transitions with 2.28 eV and 2.38 eV band gap energies. Ellipsometry measurements were carried out in the 1.2-6.0 eV spectral region to get information about optical constants, real and imaginary part...
Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Zinc Oxide Nanostructures Under Strain: I-Nanoribbons
Kilic, Mehmet Emin; Erkoç, Şakir (American Scientific Publishers, 2013-01-01)
Structural properties of zinc oxide nanoribbons have been investigated by performing classical molecular dynamics simulations. Atomistic potential energy function has been used to represent the interactions among the atoms. Strain has been applied to the generated ZnO nanostructures along their length, which has been realized at two different temperatures, namely 1 K and 300 K. It has been found that strained ZnO nanostructures undergo a structural change depending on temperature and geometry.
Absorption edge and optical constants of Tl2Ga2S3Se crystals from reflection and transmission, and ellipsometric measurements
Isik, M.; Hasanlı, Nızamı (2012-06-15)
The optical properties of Tl2Ga2S3Se layered crystalline semiconductors were investigated from transmission, reflection and ellipsometric measurements. The experimental results of the room temperature transmission and reflection measurements performed in the wavelength range of 400-1100 nm showed the presence of both indirect and direct transitions in the band structure of the crystals with 2.38 and 2.62 eV band gap energies.
