Photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were synthesized via acid assisted sol-gel process. The effects of different acids namely; acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid on the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles and their photocatalytic properties were investigated. XRD, SEM, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer analyses were performed to examine the physical and chemical characteristics of the nano powders. The results showed that only anatase phase of TiO2nanoparticleswith different crystallite size and morphology weresynthesized with respect tothe kinds of acid and the procedure applied. The TiO2 powder synthesized from HCl exhibited highest photocatalytic activity, and its methylene blue photodegradation efficiency was 98.1% in 90 minUV irradiation. Index of Terms: TiO2 powder, Photocatalytic activity, Sol-gel process, Acid effect.

Synthesis of g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction composites with enhanced solar light photocatalytic activity
Gündoğmuş, Peli; Öztürk, Abdullah; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2020)
The solar light sensitive g-C3N4/TiO2 composites containing various amounts of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and titania (TiO2) were prepared by the hydrothermal and sol-gel processes for photocatalytic applications. Hydrothermally derived g-C3N4/TiO2 composites were subjected to regulated heat treatments at temperatures ranging from 350 to 500 oC for 1 h to improve their photocatalytic efficiency. Particle size, crystal structure, morphology, and optical properties of the g-C3N4/TiO2 nanocomposites wer...
Preparation and characterization of ni-nitrilotriacetic acid bearing Poly(Methacrylic acid) coated superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles
TURAL, Bilsen; KAYA, Murat; Özkan, Necati; Volkan, Mürvet (2008-02-01)
Stable superparamagnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized via co-precipitation in the presence of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) in aqueous solution. The polymer coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) techniques. These measurements reveal the presence of magnetite nanoparticles with a size of approximately 8 nm inside...
Effect of initial water content and calcination temperature on photocatalytic properties of TiO2 nanopowders synthesized by the sol-gel process
Agartan, Lutfi; Kapusuz, Derya; PARK, JONGEE; Öztürk, Abdullah (2015-12-01)
The effects of initial water content and calcination temperature on sol gel synthesized TiO2 powders were studied. Mother solutions had water/Ti-precursor mole ratios (R ratio) of 1, 5, 10, and 50. Dried aerogels were calcined for 3 h at temperatures of 300, 400, and 500 degrees C to obtain crystallized TiO2 nanopowders in the range of 15-30 nm. PE-scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed to investigate the morphological and structural properties of the nanopowders synthes...
Production of photocatalytically active TiO₂ –P₂O₅ glasses by the Sol-gel process
Öztürk, Yiğit Cansın; Efe, Mert; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2019)
TiO2-P2O5 (TP) gels containing large amounts of TiO2 were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel process. Influence of processing parameters such as pH, Ti precursor type, amount, H2O/Ti ratio, solvent type, concentration on the formation of homogeneous gels were investigated. Prepared gels were subjected to regulated heat-treatments at various temperatures, durations, and heating rates to obtain monolithic TP glasses. Binary glasses having compositions of xTiO2 . (1-x)P2O5 (x= 70, 80, 90, 95 mol %) were p...
