In this experimental study, 8-shaped direct tensile test and split tensile test (Brazilian test) were used to measure the tensile strength of compacted clay soil. The unconfined compressive strengths of the same clay samples were also determined. Laboratory tests were performed on Ankara clay and Kaolin clay with the addition of various proportions of synthetic polypropylene fiber, pulverized rubber, and bentonite. This usage of different stabilizing agents enabled the authors to observe the reliability of the tensile strength measurement methods when soils’ mechanical properties were significantly changed and to develop universal equations which also can be applied on stabilized soils. The data between the results of 8-shaped direct tensile tests, split tensile tests, and unconfined compression tests were correlated. The ratio of direct tensile strength to split tensile strength and to unconfined compressive strength was calculated to be 1.9 and 0.4, respectively. Also, the ratio of split tensile strength to unconfined compressive strength was calculated to be 0.2. Three empirical equations were developed according to the Ankara clay and Kaolin clay mixtures’ tensile strengths, index properties, and compaction characteristics and they were proposed to estimate the tensile strength of fine-grained soils.

S235 Çeliğinin MAG Köşe Kaynağında Farklı Sabitleme Noktalarına Bağlı Gelişen Çarpılma Eğilimlerinin Sonlu Elemanlar Yöntemi ile Tahmin Edilmesi
Bedir, Elif; Batıgün, Caner; Gür, Cemil Hakan (null; 2015-11-21)
Bu çalışmada, S235 yapı çeliği plakalarına uygulanan MAG köşe kaynağı işlemi esnasında kullanılan sabitleme sisteminin yapıda meydana gelen deformasyon eğilimi üzerindeki etkisi incelenmiş ve deformasyonun önceden tayin edilebilirliği tartışılmıştır. Uygulanan sabitleme düzeninin yapıda kapladığı hangi faktörlere bağlı olduğu anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Farklı sabitleme sistemleri kullanılarak MAG kaynağına tabi tutulan S235 tipi çelik plakalarda meydana gelecek olan deformasyon, “Weld Planner” yazılımı kull...
Effect of fiber and resin type on the axial and circumferencial tensile strength of fiber reinforced polyester pipe
Gökçe, Neslihan; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
In this study, the aim is to investigate the stiffness, longitudinal tensile strength and circumferential tensile strength of short fiber reinforced polyester composite pipes produced by centrifugal casting production method. To achieve this aim, theoretical calculation of modulus of elasticity of pipes was done and then test program was carried out on pipe samples produced with three different resin types which were orthophthalic, isophthalic and vinyl ester resin and three different fiber types which were...
Effects of injection molding conditions on the mechanical properties of polyamide/glass fiber composites
Cansever, Cahit Can; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2007)
In this study, effect of injection molding process parameters on fiber length and on mechanical properties of Polyamide-6 / glass fiber composite were investigated to produce higher performance composites. Polyamide-6 was first compounded with an E-grade glass fiber in a co-rotating intermeshing twin screw extruder. Then, by using this composite, twenty-five types of experiments were performed by injection molding by changing the barrel temperature, injection pressure, hold pressure, mold temperature, cooli...
Effect of resin and fiber on the abrasion, impact and pressure resistance of cylindrical composite structures
Kaya, Derya; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resin and fiber on the abrasion, impact and internal pressure resistances of fiber reinforced plastic composite pipes produced by continuous filament winding method. For this study, pipe samples were produced with different combinations of resin type, fiber type, fiber amount and fiber length. All the samples were tested in accordance with the related ISO (International Organization for Standardization), DIN (German Standardization Institution) and BSI...
An experimental study into bearing of rigid piled rafts under vertical loads
Türkmen, Haydar Kürşat; Ergun, Mehmet Ufuk; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In this study, the load bearing behavior of piled raft foundations is investigated performing laboratory and field tests. Piled raft foundation of a multi storey building was also instrumented and monitored in order to study the load sharing mechanism of piled raft foundations. A small reinforced concrete piled raft of 2.3 m square supported by four mini piles at the corners was loaded and contribution of the raft support up to 41 % of the total load was observed. The soil was stiff fissured Ankara clay wit...
