urkey has been making many legal arrangements for sustainable water management during the harmonization process with the European Union. In order to make cost effective and efficient decisions, monitoring network in Turkey has been expanding. However, due to time and budget constraints, desired number of monitoring campaigns can not be carried. Hence, in this study, independent parameters that can be measured easily and quickly are used to estimate water quality parameters in Lake Mogan and Eymir using linear regression. Nonpoint sources are one of the major pollutant components in Eymir and Mogan lakes. In this paper, a correlation between easily measurable parameters, DO, temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, precipitation and dependent variables, TN, TP, COD, Chl-a, TSS, Total Coliform is investigated. Simple regression analysis is performed for each season in Eymir and Mogan lakes by using SPSS Statistical program using the water quality data collected between 2006-2012. Regression analysis demonstrated significant linear relationship between measured and simulated concentrations for TN (R2=0.86), TP (R2=0.85), TSS (R2=0.91), Chl-a (R2=0.94), COD (R2=0.99), T. Coliform (R2=0.97) which are the best results in each season for Eymir and Mogan Lakes. The overall results of this study shows that by using easily measurable parameters even in ungauged situation the water quality of lakes can be predicted. Moreover, the outputs obtained from the regression equations can be used as an input for water quality models such as phosphorus budget model which is used to calculate the required reduction in the external phosphorus load to Lake Mogan to meet the water quality standards.

Development of a methodology for identification and control of the chemicals of the greatest concern: Yeşilirmak River Basin case study
Küçük, Elif; Yetiş, Ükü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) aims to achieve good water status of surface water and groundwaters. For the purpose of evaluating chemical status, the Member States are required to monitor 45 priority substances in water bodies. To ensure good ecological status, the WFD requires the Member States to identify “river basin specific pollutants” and establish the environmental quality standards for these pollutants. In accordance with the WFD, main objectives of this study are to find out t...
Rehabilitation of water supply systems
Toğrul, Nevzat; Merzi, Nuri; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Management of water supply systems by an economic and efficient way is a significant issue for water authorities. Selection and operation of water supply elements appropriately to satisfy water need affects the energy consumption of the system. This study aims to constitute a long term rehabilitation plan for water supply elements (only storage tanks, pumps and transmission line pipes are in the scope of the study). A case study has been performed on N8.3 pressure zone of Ankara water distribution network. ...
Determination of groundwater threshold values: a methodology applied to Gediz basin
Bulut, Onur Fatih; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Turkish bylaw on Protection of Groundwater against Pollution and Deterioration requires the establishment of groundwater thresholds in groundwater bodies. According to this regulation, water status, as good or not, is to be determined based on the chemical status. Indeed, in a EU Project entitled “Background Criteria for the Identification of Groundwater Thresholds-BRIDGE”, in an attempt to the implementation of Water Frame Directive, a methodological framework has been developed to determine threshold valu...
Assessment of responsible sectors having considerable pollution load in Yesilirmak river basin, Turkey
Erdem, Elif; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
The Water Framework Directive(WFD) of the European Union requires achieving good quantitative and qualitative status for all water bodies within its territory. For achieving good chemical and ecological status, the Member States were expected to comply with the Environmental Quality Standards(EQSs) for 45 dangerous substances identified as "priority" and river basin “specific pollutants” requiring identification. This study aims to identify the potential point pollution sources of the river basin specific p...
The European Union water framework directive and Turkey‟s water management policy : an analysis
Sümer, Vakur; Güneş, Şule; Department of International Relations (2011)
This thesis focuses on the relationship with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Turkey‟s water management policy. The aim of the thesis is to understand and analyze impacts of Water Framework Directive on different dimensions of Turkey‟s water management policy. This thesis argues that legal discourses, organizations and policy networks prevailing in Turkey‟s water management policy are more flexible in terms of change, whereas institutional arrangements, which constitute the substantive part of the...
