Due to reasons such as climate change, resource depletion, air pollution and excessive waste accumulation, there is a growing interest towards smart sustainable cities (SSCs). Various organizations and initiatives have developed standards and key performance indicators (KPIs) for the evaluation of the smart sustainable cities. However, these approaches are limited to a city scale, and a smaller unit of analysis, that is a building, should also be considered to support these approaches. While various smart building assessment tools have been proposed from various countries, there is no globally accepted standard/formalization. Moreover, buildings may require additional criteria while transitioning into smart sustainable cities. Hence, the objective of this study is to evaluate and tailor the SSC concept into a building scale. This paper follows a top to bottom approach to identify the smart sustainable building requirements, building up on the smart sustainable city KPIs. The adaptation of the KPIs is evaluated regarding relevance (whether the KPIs are related in a building scale), and applicability (whether the data can be collected in a building scale). The results of this study can be used as a reference to identify what the buildings should include to support a smart sustainable city formation

A data-driven approach for predicting solar energy potential of buildings in urban fabric
Duran, Ayça; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2022-7)
Energy-efficient buildings that use clean and sustainable energy sources are urgently needed to reduce the environmental impact of buildings and mitigate climate change in cities. Buildings have great potential in harvesting solar energy by their solar exposure capacity. Developments in PV technologies also encourage the integration of PV systems into architectural applications. However, urban contexts can limit solar energy generation capacity of buildings by shading building envelopes and reducing availab...
Comparison of BEST and LEED green building rating systems through cost based optimization
Uğurlu, Bengisu; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2020-1-25)
Buildings have significant effects on climate change due to vast resource consumption and pollution generation. Improving the effective use of limited resources and constructing environmentally friendly buildings are important in the realm of mitigations for climate change. Several countries have their green building rating systems tailored towards their regulations, distinctive climatic conditions, unique cultures and traditions, diverse building types and ages, or wide-ranging environmental, economic, and...
Adopting sustainability assessment criteria to guide urban regeneraton projects: two case studies in Ankara
Seyhan, Zeynep.; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2019)
Increasing awareness of climate change, loss of biodiversity and increase in environmental pollution due to the current trends of consumption in the urban areas have brought about a myriad of schemas to guide environmentally friendly urban developments. These schemes or Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment Tools (NSA Tools) provide a convenient way to establish healthier and sustainable cities. Meanwhile, Turkey is going through a rapid urban transformation process that is being questioned with respect to...
METU Smart Campus Project (iEAST)
Ertekin Bolelli, Şeyda; Keysan, Ozan; Göl, Murat; Bayazıt, Göksenin Hande; Yıldız, Tunahan (2020-01-01)
With the rise of urbanization, cities around the world have embraced applications and benefits of leveraging advanced technologies to deliver a range of services while promoting efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable eco-systems. By harnessing technology to improve the quality of life of citizens, these advanced technological tools have become critical in transforming urbanized cities across the globe into smart cities. Universities in particular have served as an ideal platform to showcase sm...
An Assessment of energy efficient and climate sensitive urban design principles: design proposals for residential city blocks in temperate arid and hot humid regions
Karagöz, Damla; Balaban, Osman; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2016)
Environmental problems caused by urbanization and industrialization processes have almost irreversibly damaged the ecological balance in the natural environment. In the 21st century, when half of the worlds population has become urban, the links between urbanization and environmental problems gained more attention and the search for measures and solutions to address the negative impacts of urban development on natural environment increased. Global warming and climate change, the major challenges that contem...
