To explore the relationships between the generative research and design for sustainability at the idea generation phase of the design process, a design research method that emerges from generative research approach “Experience Reflection Modeling” (ERM) has been developed and integrated into a design for sustainability project within the context of design education in the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU). The ERM method brings together 3D modelling, interview and video recording techniques to help user reflect her/his needs, experiences, preferences and expectations regarding a product lifespan. This method focuses on integrating user observations with the idea generation phase of the product design and development process. This paper presents initial conclusions and findings from a doctoral study with an emphasis on the development of the ERM method. Firstly, it will provide an overview of the generative research with a particular focus on the ERM involving people in the early stages of the design process. Then, it will present “My Sustainable Mini Oven” project and its sustainable design considerations. Subsequently, the paper will illustrate how these considerations (e.g. engaging design solutions, energy consumption, product maintenance and repair, etc.) are integrated into the ERM method. Finally, further conclusions and insights in terms of the relationships between the ERM and sustainability will be discussed.

Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
Generative design research for sustainability: exemplary cases for the adaptation of the EC guide tool and the ERM method
Kulaksız, Mert; Güngör Boncukçu, Itır; Oğur, Dilruba; Paksoy, İsmail Yavuz; Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (null; 2017-11-03)
This paper presents the main process of a graduate course entitled ‘Generative Design Research for Sustainability’ offered in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University in the spring semester of 2015/2016 through exemplary design research cases conducted by the graduate students at the doctoral level. These cases focus on the adaptation of the generative tool and the method, namely Experience Chart (EC) Guide tool (Kulaksız, 2016) and Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM) method...
Transforming and prolonging design lifespans: design education cases for sustainability
Doğan, Çağla (2017-11-10)
This paper aims to present an approach focusing on design education for sustainability through providing two exemplary cases from third-year industrial design projects. The main themes explored in these projects involve personalization via design transformation, adaption and upgrading during design, use and post-use phases. The first project developed and facilitated at Carleton University, the School of Industrial Design mainly addresses the key theme of transformation of LED lighting from indoors to outdo...
The position of three-dimensional modeling and visualization techniques in industrial design education
COŞKUN, MERVE; Akiner, Dilem (2012-05-04)
The purpose of this research is to determine the position of three-dimensional modeling and digital visualization within the scope of concept and product development process in the undergraduate education in Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture Department of Industrial Design, designate the problems that the students encounter during the integration of these methods to the design process, and finally question how these methods can be incorporated into design education in order to influen...
Experience reflection modelling (ERM) as a generative research method and student engagement in product design at undergraduate level
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Research approaches driven by design thinking have the potential to bridge early stages of design process to idea generation phases in design education. Generative research is emerged from participatory approach which is used at early stages of design process aims to elicit user needs, experiences, expectations and preferences by using generative tools and techniques through helping non-designer participants express their thoughts, feelings, opinions effectively independent of their skills and abilities in ...
