The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) is the most visionary piece of European environmental legislation that aims to achieve good water status of both surface water and groundwater bodies. The Directive provides a fundamental basis for surface water monitoring activities in the European Member States. The objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of micropollutants in the Yesilirmak River and to develop a cost-effective monitoring strategy based on spatiotemporal data. A 2-year seasonal monitoring program was conducted between 2016 and 2018, and the water samples were analyzed for 45 priority substances as defined by the WFD and 250 national river basin-specific pollutants. In the basin, 166 pollutants were quantified in at least one of the samples with individual concentrations ranging from 6 x 10(-6)mu g/L to 100 mg/L. Fifty-four pollutants with a frequency of occurrence greater than 5% were selected for further evaluation. Based on statistical evaluation of the data, 20 pollutants were identified as the pollutants of primary concern. These 20 pollutants were grouped under three categories (metals, biocides, and industrial organic compounds) and their spatiotemporal distributions in the basin were assessed to establish a monitoring strategy specific to each pollutant category. The results of the study revealed that the common season for the monitoring of all pollutant categories was the spring. This study provides a generic methodology for the development of a cost-effective water quality monitoring strategy, which can be applicable for use in different basins and pollutant datasets.

The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) aims to achieve good water status of surface water and groundwaters. For the purpose of evaluating chemical status, the Member States are required to monitor 45 priority substances in water bodies. To ensure good ecological status, the WFD requires the Member States to identify “river basin specific pollutants” and establish the environmental quality standards for these pollutants. In accordance with the WFD, main objectives of this study are to find out t...
Investigation of sustainable development potential for Ulubey Aquifer System, Turkey
Burcu, Unsal; Hasan, Yazicigil (2014-06-06)
This study investigates sustainable development potential for Ulubey aquifer system which serves as an important water supply for Usak province (Turkey). In recent years, growing population, accelerating industrial activities and decreasing rainfall, as well as contamination of the surface water resources, made groundwater indispensable to meet the freshwater demands of Usak province. Therefore, a sustainable groundwater development plan has to be set up by determining the sustainable yield of the system, w...

The purpose of the EU Groundwater Directive (2006/118/EC) is to prevent and control groundwater pollution. For this purpose, it requires member states to assess groundwater chemical status. To evaluate the chemical status of a groundwater body, threshold values (TVs) of the relevant risk-posing parameters should be established. In addition, TVs should be implemented in the river basin management plan to prevent or limit inputs of pollutants into groundwater. In the present study, TVs of the substances (12 m...

The European Union (EU)'s Nitrates Directive (ND) (91/676/EEC) aims to reduce water pollution caused or induced by nitrates from agricultural sources and to prevent further such pollution. Turkey being a candidate country to EU requires heavy cost investments in achieving approximation with EU Environmental Acquis. This study provides a description of the technical measures and investment cost assessment related to the implementation of the ND in Turkey. As Turkey has not yet designated nitrate vulnerable z...
Assessment of responsible sectors having considerable pollution load in Yesilirmak river basin, Turkey
Erdem, Elif; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
The Water Framework Directive(WFD) of the European Union requires achieving good quantitative and qualitative status for all water bodies within its territory. For achieving good chemical and ecological status, the Member States were expected to comply with the Environmental Quality Standards(EQSs) for 45 dangerous substances identified as "priority" and river basin “specific pollutants” requiring identification. This study aims to identify the potential point pollution sources of the river basin specific p...
