Urban development leads to replacement of impervious surfaces with pervious surfaces, vegetation and production of various environmental pollutants. In addition, this phenomenon has increased the devastating effects of urban stormwater and has exacerbated the water quality of many freshwater resources (surface and underground) throughout the world. To alleviate this condition, new models of urban stormwater systems, including Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) as well as its software package, MUSIC, have been developed. Regarding the water sensitive urban design, some urban stormwater treatment devices have been proposed and implemented to alleviate the effects of land use changes and improve the quality of downstream water. Although this new models provide cost-effective urban stormwater management methods, it is very challenging to determine an optimal mixture of various treatment devices and minimize the cost of urban stormwater control systems in this regard. Traditionally, the optimum and cost-effective urban stormwater treatment systems have been developed using simulation models such as MUSIC on the basis of trial and error. It should be noted that the latter models require considerable time to get close to an optimal solution. In this study, a simulation-optimization model of urban stormwater management system has been developed using a combination of MUSIC simulation model and Genetic Algorithm thereof. The simulation-optimization model (MUSIC-GA) greatly reduces the computation time and facilitates direct access to absolute optimal solution. The results of a case study on the application of the developed model in Australia have also shown that there have been some desirable convergences between the results of the simulation-optimization model and absolute optimal solution over various implementations of the model.

Emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) are serious environmental concerns known for their prominent adverse and hazardous ecological effects, and persistence in nature. Their detrimental impacts have inspired researchers to develop the strategic tools that reduce and overcome the challenges caused by EOPs' rising concentration. As such, biochar becomes as a promising class of biomass-derived functional materials that can be used as low-cost and environmentally-friendly emerging catalysts to remove EOPs. Herein,...
Development of a glutathione-S-transferase-based biosensor for the detection of heavy metals
Saatçi, Ebru; İşcan, Mesude; Department of Biochemistry (2005)
In the recent years, environmental pollution becomes a health threatening issue for human beings. Technological developments introduce industrial wastes and heavy metals, and developments in agriculture introduce pesticides into the world that we live. All these toxic wastes accumulate in drinking water and food consumed by humans. Therefore, detection of toxic wastes in all kinds of environmental samples, and development of new detection techniques become an important issue. In this study, development of a...
A data-driven approach for predicting solar energy potential of buildings in urban fabric
Duran, Ayça; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2022-7)
Energy-efficient buildings that use clean and sustainable energy sources are urgently needed to reduce the environmental impact of buildings and mitigate climate change in cities. Buildings have great potential in harvesting solar energy by their solar exposure capacity. Developments in PV technologies also encourage the integration of PV systems into architectural applications. However, urban contexts can limit solar energy generation capacity of buildings by shading building envelopes and reducing availab...
Incorporation of waste and pozzolanic materials as partial replacement for the development of sustainable concrete
Hamza, Ali; İnce, Ceren; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2018-1)
Excessive production of cement due to modern construction practices frames cement as a leading pollutant of releasing significant amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere. The thesis begins with the examination of the alternative binding materials used as partial replacement to cement. Supplementary cementitious material, silica fume, is used as partial replacement to Portland cement whereas, waste materials, marble dust and crushed bricks, are used as partial replacement to the fine aggregates in this thesis. The ...

Water pollution has become a major environmental concern for public and environmental health in developing countries. Water resources are being contaminated mainly due to mixing of domestic, municipal, and industrial wastewaters. The wastewater management and treatment situation is deplorable mainly because of financial constraints, the unavailability of technically trained human resources, and electricity shortages. Moreover, there is a challenge for the scientific community and wastewater management exper...
