Renewable energy resources increased their importance in the last decades due to environmental pollution problems. Additionally, the fact that fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas will be depleted in near future encourages researchers to make investigations on alternative energy resources. Wind energy, which is one of the most used alternative resources, has a great potential. In this study, Weibull parameters at Incek region of Ankara (the capital city of Turkey), where /intim University campus is located, were determined for four different seasons and for twelve months in order to accomplish wind speed characterization at the region. Wind speed data at 20 m and 30 m heights were collected from. a measurement station installed at Atilim University campus area. The data were taken as 1 min average values for a one year period between June 2012 and June 2013. Hourly average wind speed values for each height were derived using the collected wind data. Weibull parameters were calculated with five different methods using the derived hourly average wind speed values. According to root mean square error analyses, the best methods for which Weibull distribution fits the actual wind data were determined as power density and empirical methods. The power and energy density values for the region were also calculated for each season and each month. It was revealed that the maximum power density is encountered in March with about 98 (W/m(2)). Since this power density indicates that large scale wind turbine use is not a good option at the region, the performances of three different small scale wind turbines were evaluated. According to the results, two of the investigated wind turbines were found to be capable to generate all yearly energy need of an average household in Turkey. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Evaluating the use of satellite-based precipitation estimates for discharge estimation in ungauged basins
Soytekin, Arzu; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
For the process of social and economic development, hydropower energy has an important role such as being renewable, clean, and having less impact on the environment. In decision of the hydropower potential of a study area, the preliminary condition is the availability of the gages in the area. However, in Turkey, the gages in working order are limited and getting decreased in recent years. Therefore, the satellite based precipitation estimates has been gaining importance to predict runoff for ungauged basi...
An examination of the legislative framework for supporting the renewable tariffs
Akca, Alper; Sevaioğlu, Osman; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
Sustainability and environmental concerns are critical issues in energy sector. Limited availability of fossil resources, environmental pollution caused by the greenhouse gases emitted as a result of fossil fuel usage and safety issues of nuclear power plants cause the seek of new resources in energy industry. Renewable energy sources emerge as the alternative energy resources for the industry. The unlimited availability of most of the renewable resources meets the sustainability needs in the energy sector....
An Assessment of energy efficient and climate sensitive urban design principles: design proposals for residential city blocks in temperate arid and hot humid regions
Karagöz, Damla; Balaban, Osman; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2016)
Environmental problems caused by urbanization and industrialization processes have almost irreversibly damaged the ecological balance in the natural environment. In the 21st century, when half of the worlds population has become urban, the links between urbanization and environmental problems gained more attention and the search for measures and solutions to address the negative impacts of urban development on natural environment increased. Global warming and climate change, the major challenges that contem...
Investigation of alkaline pretreatment parameters on amulti-product basis for the co-production of glucose and hemicellulose based films from corn cobs
Toraman, Hilal Ezgi; Bakır Bölükbaşı, Ufuk; Özkan, Necati; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
There is an increasing trend in the world for using renewable sources of fuels and chemicals due to the continuous depletion of fossil fuel reserves besides the environmental issues related with the exploitation of these resources. Lignocellulosic biomass is seen as the most promising candidate to be used instead of fossil sources because of its availability, relatively low price and less competition with food and feed crops. In this study, corn cobs, a lignocellulosic agricultural waste, were subjected to ...
Determination of wind power potential and optimal wind power plant locations in Turkey
Çetinay, Hale; Güven, Ali Nezih; Tör, Osman Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Due to increased environmental concerns, utilization of the renewable energy, especially the wind power, gains importance. Like developed countries which have set their renewable energy targets for the long term integration, Turkish government has also set the goal as 20 GW of total wind power installed capacity in 2023. In this thesis, the wind power potential in Turkey is analyzed and different cases are studied to determine optimal locations for wind power plant establishment. In order to determine the w...
