This paper presents a stochastic integer program developed to determine how to schedule inspection, damage assessment, and repair tasks so as to optimize the post-earthquake restoration of the electric power system. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the average time each customer is without power, and a genetic algorithm is used to solve it. The effectiveness of the schedules recommended by the optimization are evaluated by running a detailed discrete event simulation model of the restoration process with both the optimization-generated schedules and the power company's original schedules, and comparing the resulting restorations according to three measures-average time each customer is without power, time required to restore 90% of customers, and time required to restore 98% of customers. The optimization and simulation models both consider all the earthquakes that could affect the power system and represent the uncertainty surrounding expected restoration times. The models were developed through an application to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) electric power system, but the general approach is extendable to other electric power systems, other lifelines, and other hazards. Fault detection and service restoration in medium voltage distribution system
Altın, Müfit; Özay, Nevzat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
This thesis proposes an algorithm and develops a program for fault detection and system restoration in medium voltage distribution systems. In Turkey, TUBITAK-UZAY developed distribution automation system including fault detection and service restoration functions for Bogazici Electricity Distribution Company. By the time, expanding of distribution system with nonstandardized infrastructure (for example more than one circuit breaker in the feeder, mesh and closed loop feeder structure), developed automation...
Optimization of Power Conversion Efficiency in Threshold Self-Compensated UHF Rectifiers With Charge Conservation Principle
Gharehbaghi, Kaveh; KOÇER, FATİH; Külah, Haluk (2017-09-01)
This paper presents a compact model for threshold self-compensated rectifiers that can be used to optimize circuit parameters early in the design phase instead of time-consuming transient simulations. A design procedure is presented for finding the optimum aspect ratio of transistors used in the converter and number of rectifying stages to achieve the maximum power conversion efficiency. In the presented analysis, the relation between the power conversion efficiency and the load current over the variation o...
Fault Identification of Rotating Electric Machines using Comparative Analysis Methods
Balan, H.; Vadan, I.; Buzdugan, M.; Botezan, A.; Karaissas, P. (2011-09-10)
The analysis of the electrical machines operation, usually appeals to monitoring and diagnosis techniques, the operation faults involving electrical, mechanical and aero-dynamical parameters modification. The mechanical faults are due mainly to the unbalance of the rotating parts of the electrical machines and their analysis can be carried out using the vibration amplitude versus time and/or the vibration speed versus frequency characteristics. This paper presents a fault identification method, using a comp...
A new algorithm and computation approach for economic dispatch with prohibited operating zones in power systems
Cetinkaya, N; Urkmez, A; Erkmen, İsmet; Yalcinoz, T (2005-01-01)
This paper presents a new algorithm and computation approach to solve the economic load dispatch (ELD) in electrical power systems. We applied a new power formula to solve the LLD problem. If production units cost Curves are represented property then ELD becomes More Correct. In this respect we assumed that production units have prohibited operating zones. Cost curves of the production units are generally accepted as piece-wise quadratic function. The power production is cheaper since we do not use the prod...
Feedback motion planning of a novel fully actuated unmanned surface vehicle via sequential composition of random elliptical funnels
Özdemir, Oğuz; Ankaralı, Mustafa Mert; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-12-27)
This thesis proposes and analyzes a motion planning and control schema for unmanned surface vehicles that fuses sampling-based approaches’ probabilistic completeness with closed-loop approaches’ robustness. The Proposed schema is based on the sequential composition of elliptical funnels, and it consists of two stages: tree generation and motion control. For validation of the approach, we carried out experiments using both simulation and physical setup besides the mathematical analysis. In order to have a co...
