Electricity is a widely used form of energy and has many uses in our day-to-day life. Therefore illegal electricity consumption, namely electricity theft,is a crucial problem in developing and developed countries. This study aims to find the relationship between immigration and illegal electricity consumption. As far as we know, this is the first study to explore this relationship empirically. In this study, we use panel data and difference in differences estimation methods. Because Turkey had a random immigration influx and most of Turkey's immigrants' population consists of Syrian immigrants, we take Syrian immigrants in Turkey as a case study. We use data of electricity theft and loss rate of 27 provinces and their socio-economic data for 2009-2016. Using the panel data fixed effects and difference in differences estimations, we find that immigrant influx significantly impacts illegal electricity consumption. Moreover, the unemployment rate, privatization, population density, and amount of agricultural land have significant effects on illegal electricity consumption in our models. Keywords: Electricity consumption, electricity theft, immigration, difference-in-differences

Three dimensional dynamic response of a concrete gravity dam
Yılmaztürk, Sema Melek; Binici, Barış; Arıcı, Yalın; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Hydroelectric power is a commonly used alternative source of energy in developing countries. In this regard, concrete gravity dams are the most preferred dam type especially with the developments in the engineering industry. Roller compacted concrete became more popular in dam construction due to its advantages of speed and economy. Several methods are used for the design of concrete gravity dams by analyzing the dam response under static and dynamic loads. This study provides three dimensional linear dynam...
Fluid-CO2 injection impact in a geothermal reservoir: Evaluation with 3-D reactive transport modeling
AKIN, TAYLAN; Baser, Ali; Saracoglu, Onder; Akın, Serhat (2022-01-01)
Geothermal energy is commonly recognized as an environmentally friendly source of energy. However, geothermal fluids have unusually high CO2 content, particularly, in carbonated geothermal reservoirs. An efficient method to mitigate the CO2 emissions of geothermal power plants is to re-inject the captured CO2 with the effluent fluid to mineralize mainly into calcite under reservoir conditions (e.g., reservoir temperatures ranging from 200 to 220 degrees C). One of the major concerns about the re-injection o...
Feasibility of pumped storage hydropower with existing pricing policy in Turkey
Barbaros, Efe; Aydın, İsmail; Celebioglu, Kutay (Elsevier BV, 2021-02-01)
Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH) has been used worldwide as a means of energy storage for many years. Unlike many countries with pumped storage, Turkey has not needed a PSH facility until very recently since the existing hydropower plants with large reservoirs provided the required flexibility to meet daily demand variations. The share of renewable energy in Turkey's electrical grid has significantly increased in the last decade. Moreover, the first nuclear power plant of the country is planned to star...
A multi-band metamaterial absorber design for solar cell applicatıins
Mulla, Batuhan; Sabah, Cumali; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2016-8)
Solar energy is one of the most abundant energy in nature. Harvesting this energy in a more efficient way can be realized by metamaterials. Metamaterials which are manmade artificial materials can provide great absorption characteristics as well as reduced material costs with their compact structures. In this thesis, unique metamaterial absorber designs for thermo-photovoltaic and for photovoltaic applications are proposed and numerically analyzed in terms of their absorption capacity, polarization an...
Geochemical modeling of NCG injection in a geothermal well using doublet well model
İlgin, Buğrahan; Akın, Serhat; Erol, Selçuk; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2021-7-29)
Geothermal energy is regarded as an environmentally friendly source of energy. However, the amount of non-condensable gases (NCG), which are co-produced with brine, are significantly high in the geothermal fields of Turkey. To overcome the NCG emission produced by power plants, which is mainly CO2, one of the efficient methods is re-injecting the captured NCG into the reservoir. The ultimate aim of the reinjection is to mineralize CO2 in the reservoir as carbonate minerals. In this thesis, a reactive transp...
