Traditional Dwellings of Golde (INCESU): A Rural Heritage in the Process of Change

2021-09-01
Golde, officially named Incesu, is a rural settlement located in Aegean Anatolia. Before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923, Golde hosted both Orthodox Rum and Muslim Turkish communities. Despite out-migration since 1923, traditional life continued in the settlement with a small population that now comprises mostly elderly Turkish people. This paper aims to understand traditional Golde dwelling units by analysing the influence of daily-life practices, customs, traditions and values through interviews with current locals and the oral testimonies of former Rum inhabitants. A site survey identified 136 traditional dwelling units, 68 of which are still inhabited. Site reconstruction analysis revealed the original condition of 90 dwelling units. These formed the primary focus of investigation. No major differences were found between houses originally belonging to the Rum and Turkish communities. However, the study identified significant adaptations of the dwelling units in line with changing socio-cultural conditions over time.

Assessing the values and meanings attributed by inhabitants in multilayered rural heritage places: the case of Çavdarhisar
Orhon, Gönül Ayça; Bilgin Altınöz, Ayşe Güliz; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2019)
Many cities, villages and towns have been described as multi-layered settlements in Anatolia, which has been a settlement for ages. The study focuses on the settlements where rural and archaeological heritage sites overlap. Today, integrated approaches to the conservation of these places are still lacking, and the focus is generally on the values and problems of the ancient city. The heritage values of the recent past are reduced to physical characteristics and the continuity of the settlements is interrupt...
Arnavutköy Tarihi Çevre Özellikleri
Nayır, Zeynep (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 1978)
Arnavutköy is a small village on the Bosphorus. Due to its position and fresh-water springs, the site was a favourable spot since Roman times. In the fourth century, Byzantine emperor Constantius I (337-361) ordered the construction of a church dedicated to Archangel Michael. During the reign of Emperor Justinian the Great (527-565) this building was replaced by a new Michaelion, circular in plan and surrounded by a colonnaded courtyard. The village flourished until the attacks of the approaching Ottomans m...
Spatio-temporal transformation of ‘bağ’ settlements and their changing unique character in the case of Muğla, Karabağlar
Koca, Feray; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2012)
‘Bağ’ settlements have been a part of dynamic spatial systems, which seasonally depend on and reciprocally interact with Anatolian towns throughout centuries. This thesis presents the transforming setting of ‘bağ’ settlements related to changing values and meanings through an ontological assessment. Therefore, the thesis assumes that the main values of spatial organization, farmland pattern, ecological formation, settlement character, socio-cultural structure and lifestyle of the inhabitants constitute the ...

Analysis of crust and mantle structure across Turkey using passive seismic data
Abgarmi, Bizhan; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Department of Geological Engineering (2019)
Anatolia is one of the most tectonically active regions in the world which is amalgamation of different terranes and structures. This region has a complextectonic evolution which includes various stages of subduction and collision. This complexity demands more detailed observations of the crust and upper mantle to generate a comprehensive geodynamic model. However, the knowledge related to crust and mantle structure beneath Anatolia is still very limited so the fates of the structures in deeper interiors ar...
