IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE OVER THE VARIABILITY OF DROUGHT CHARACTERISTICS OVER 25 BASINS OF TURKEY

Ersoy, Nuri Erhan
Analyzing the effects of drought and making accurate predictions for the future under changing climate conditions are of great importance in the agricultural, drinking water, industrial and ecosystem policies to be determined. The climate projection simulations generated over CORDEX domains are one the most popular datasets used today in climate change related studies. In this study impact of climate change over the variability of drought characteristics over 25 basins of Turkey were investigated using climate projection datasets run over CORDEX domain. Historical and future climate projections over Turkey from 56 GCM – RCM pairs at 0.11o spatial resolution for the CMIP5 RCP8.5 scenarios were downloaded from CORDEX EUR-11. Accuracy assessments of historical simulations against ground observations were performed to eliminate the 14 poor performing models and retain 42 better performing models. Additionally, bias corrections of GCM-RCM model simulations for historical and future simulations were performed using ERA5-Land dataset over 25 basins separately. Future drought analyzes were performed using the standardized precipitation index (SPI) calculated using historical and future projection datasets over each basin separately. Overall, the precipitation projections show a decreasing trend where the rate of the decline increases towards the last 30 years of the century. Consistent with this trend, the drought analysis made via SPI show the drought severity and lengths increase between 2071 and 2100 over all of the basins and entire Turkey. Accordingly, the last 30 years of the century are expected to show the most severe drought conditions that has not seen before over the region.

Investigating the effects of climate change on the surface runoff potential over Kızılırmak basin
Barkış, Numan Burak; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tuğrul; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-9-2)
The aim of this study is to analyze the expected change in the surface runoff potential that will occur due to climate change in the Kızılırmak Basin until 2100. HBV hydrological model was run in this study to investigate the expected change in 3 sub-basins (SB 1535, SB 1541, and SB 1545) of Kızılırmak Basin. Total of 56 CMIP5-based GCM/RCM daily model datasets, downloaded from CORDEX EUR-11 at 0.110 spatial resolution and reflect RCP 8.5 emission scenario, were utilized. Among these model datasets, 10 of t...
Impact of Climate Change in the Southern Mediterranean of Turkey: A method to assess Oymapinar reservoir’s inflow projections
Mesta Yoleri, Buket; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Yücel, İsmail; Department of Earth System Science (2022-6)
Assessment of trends in climatological parameters observed in the last decades and the climate change projections through modeling studies indicated a high potential of increasing temperatures, decreasing precipitation, and runoff for Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Within the scope of this study, climate change analysis for Antalya and its surrounding basins is conducted and the effects of climate change on streamflow in Oymapınar Basin and inflow of Oymapınar HEPP that is used for energy prod...
EFFECTS OF DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON (DOC) AND ZOOPLANKTON GRAZING PRESSURE ON BACTERIA AND CILIATES
Yetim, Sinem; Beklioğlu, Meryem; Ger, Kemal Ali; Department of Biology (2021-11-24)
Global climate change results in extreme precipitation events that increase allochthonous organic matter (e.g., dissolved organic carbon, DOC) input into freshwater ecosystems via flooding. While DOC is a source of carbon and energy for heterotrophic organisms in freshwater ecosystems, its bottom-up effects on trophic interactions, and especially on the microbial food web, are poorly understood. Similarly, the top-down effect of contrasting zooplankton traits (i.e., generalist vs. selective) on DOC enriched...
The assessment of socio-economic impacts of climate change in rural areas: the case of Konya
Özgür, Busen; Balaban, Osman; Department of City and Regional Planning (2019)
Climate change and its related events have made significant impacts on rural areas in socio-economic as well as environmental terms. Even though agriculture sector is a cause of climate change, agricultural production itself has also been adversely affected by the climate problem. Climate change also affects rural development and conservation policies in terms of the problem it causes such as natural disasters, migration, poverty, diseases, and food security. Moreover, the rural and agricultural impacts of ...
Effects of climate change on water resources in Ömerli basin
Kara, Fatih; Yücel, İsmail; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2014)
This study investigates the impacts of climate change on water resources through precipitation and discharge analyses in Omerli catchment Istanbul, Turkey. Precipitation and temperature data are obtained from GCM (Global Circulation Model)/RCM (Regional Climate Model) combinations based on A1B carbon scenario via Europen Union (EU)-ENSEMBLESproject. The data is obtained at 25 km resolution on daily time scale for reference period between 1960 and 1990 and future period between 2071 and 2100. The HBV (Hydrol...
