© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing techniques for the fabrication of polymeric parts. Earlier applications of FDM mostly utilized pure polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). However, there has recently been an increasing demand for composite FDM filaments to obtain superior mechanical and physical properties. Fly ash (FA), a waste of coal power plants, is a promising alternative as a filler material for developing composite filaments. Due to the massive amounts of FA generated worldwide and associated environmental concerns, there has been an increasing trend in the utilization of FA particles in the polymer industry, providing a new route for FA recycling towards reducing FA’s impact on the environment. However, there has been no study to date to investigate the same route for FDM use. In this study, we incorporated 2 wt% FA into an ABS matrix using a twin-screw extruder and produced composite filaments for FDM. The specimens printed with the composite filament were tested for their microstructural, mechanical, and thermal properties through X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Overall, the properties of the composite specimens are not drastically different from those made of pure ABS, except for the decrease in the elongation at break. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using ABS-FA composites in FDM as a coloring agent that contributes to the recycling of waste material at the same time.

Friction space and the re(dis)covery of urban roads
Baş Bütüner, Funda; Guneri, Gizem Deniz (2022-01-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited. For the majority of cities worldwide, car-based mobility has begun to be replaced by alternative mobility modes. This process has augmented the lens for infrastructural topics, and placed infrastructure's latent potentiality at the forefront. Car-dependent infrastructure, however, persists in and conditions urbanism in many others. For such cities, the encounter of roads with the city and human-scale spaces raises critical ground in n...
Hydromechanical Behavior of a Tuff/Bentonite Mixture Treated with Cement
Demdoum, Abdellah; Daheur, Elhadj Guesmia; Loualbia, Hamza; Bounouara, Zahra; Ghembaza, Moulay Smaine; Akgün, Haluk (2022-01-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.Sandy soil-clay mixtures are commonly used as a liner/barrier material in various engineering applications, such as construction of hydraulic and waste containment. In this study, the hydromechanical characteristics of tuff-bentonite and tuff-bentonite/cement mixtures are investigated to propose a local barrier material. A series of free swelling, one-dimensional consolidation and falling head permeability tests for hydrauli...
Predictive Design and Analysis of Drug Transport by MultiScale Computational Models Under Uncertainty
Akalın, Ali Aykut; Dedekargınoğlu, Barış; Choi, Sae Rome; Han, Bumsoo; Özçelikkale, Altuğ (2022-01-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.Computational modeling of drug delivery is becoming an indispensable tool for advancing drug development pipeline, particularly in nanomedicine where a rational design strategy is ultimately sought. While numerous in silico models have been developed that can accurately describe nanoparticle interactions with the bioenvironment within prescribed length and time scales, predictive design of these d...
Real-time measurement of laser beam characteristics for a waterjet-guided laser machine
Subasi, Levent; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Yaman, Ulaş (2022-01-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature.Waterjet-guided laser machining is a novel process used for precision cutting and drilling of various materials and geometries. There are many noise factors in the process affecting the laser beam characteristics, namely the effective cutting length and laser power in the waterjet. Although these variables are mainly set by the laser and waterjet parameters, uncontrollable factors result in variations. Pre...
Linear and nonlinear optical characteristics of PbMoO4 single crystal for optoelectronic applications
Delice, S.; Isik, M.; Hasanlı, Nızamı (2022-10-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature. In the present paper, we studied linear and nonlinear optical properties of lead molybdate (PbMoO4) single crystals grown by Czochralski method. Raman measurement was performed in the range of 50–1000 cm−1 and 11 active vibration modes were defined in the spectrum. The nature of the observed modes was discussed in detail. Optical absorption of the material was investigated utilizing room temperatu...
