Subjective and Relational Experiences of Young Adults with Panic Disorder: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

The current thesis aims to examine subjective and relational experiences of young adults with panic disorder. Qualitative research method was used to gain a deeper understanding of the subjective and relational experiences of panic attacks for individuals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals with panic disorder, five of whom were female and three were male. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis method was used to analyze the data. In the current thesis, six superordinate themes emerged which are (1) need for control, (2) fear about loss, (3) acts instead of words, (4) the speaking body: bodily experiences of anxiety, (5) early family experiences, (6) repeating the experiences of a family member. These emerging themes were discussed within the framework of a Lacanian Psychoanalytical Theory.
