RE-UNDERSTANDING MULTIDISCIPLINARY BUILDING DESIGN PROCESSES TOWARDS THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABILITY: A MULTI-LAYERED DESIGN APPROACH

DURAN, ÖZGE SELEN
Sustainability has been one of the most researched and discussed issues within the realm of architecture as a discipline and also within the building design as a practice. However, the focal point in the majority of existing studies concentrate primarily on the design development and building performances based on the components of the design, where pre-design and post-design phases as well as multidimensional contribution of different actors are excluded. Therefore, perceiving and evaluating the entire processes and all the actors involved in these processes from a broader new perspective would provide more comprehensive achievements of sustainability. In addition to these concerns, the design process itself should have been carried out in a more sustainable manner, improving the design communication, collaboration and correspondences of multidisciplinary teams in complex building design projects. A wider understanding of sustainability is required for the achievement and more effective utilization of multidisciplinary building design developments and their relevant lifecycles. Such a multi-layered understanding of sustainability is required not only due to the integration of multidisciplinary contribution through a broader lifecycle, but also to the integration of additional dimensions to the sustainable building design development execution processes. This multidimensional approach would inevitably serve a multi-layered structure as enabling multiple data entries and follow-ups by various users with their individual priorities or concerns through the entire sustainable lifecycles for many different possible scenarios. Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
Integration of Generative Research and Sustainability into the Product Design and Development Process
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (null; 2012-07-05)
To explore the relationships between the generative research and design for sustainability at the idea generation phase of the design process, a design research method that emerges from generative research approach “Experience Reflection Modeling” (ERM) has been developed and integrated into a design for sustainability project within the context of design education in the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU). The ERM method brings together 3D modelling, interview an...
Sustainability as an Educational Concern: A Study on Industrial Design Curricula
Turhan, Senem (null; 2009-04-09)
With the emergence of sustainability, it became an important concern for curricula of industrial design education as for many other educational structures. Currently, lots of higher education institutions offer courses focusing on sustainability for various objectives. This study deals with the current situation of industrial design education in the world by means of sustainability as an educational concern. It starts with the examination of a variety of sustainable development definitions and continues wi...
Performative design processes in architectural practices in Turkey: architects’ perception
Ataman, Cem; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2021-10-01)
During the last decades, the increasing need to ensure building performance during architectural design has led to highly interactive relations between architecture and various other disciplines, in which concepts of sustainability and building performance are tightly integrated into the design process. However, the adoption of these concepts in architectural practices and the recent advancements in the field have remained rather slow. This research aims to understand performative design (PD) in the context...
Parametric Urban Design Thinking: Shared Patterns in Design by Algorithm and Design by Drawing
Çalışkan, Olgu; Ongun, Gokhan (2021-12-01)
The paper suggests a focused examination of the processes of drafting-based design and parametric design in urbanism. It discusses how spatial design's settled cognition would differ by using algorithmic systems through the altered relationships between the basic operations in design. To reveal the commonalities and distinctions between the two design methods, the authors present the detailed documentation of the workshop series, which experimented with both techniques within similar design contexts. By the...
