© 2022 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This research describes the dynamic behavior of an isolated slug driven by pressurized air in a voided line with an end orifice. A three-dimensional (3D) computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) model is used to simulate the rapid propulsion and impact at the orifice for given slug length and driving air pressure, and is validated against experimental data. New mechanisms are observed: (i) the driving air pressure at the slug tail decreases with the slug motion; (ii) when the slug arrives at the orifice, the air fraction is almost one hundred percent in the most upstream part of the pipe, then it attenuates rapidly until an invariant eighty percent is achieved with a constant mass shedding rate; (iii) the velocity distribution in the radial direction of the cross-section at the midpoint of the slug length evolves from uniform to trapezoidal and then to logarithmic during slug movement; (iv) the initial vertical slug front changes its shape due to air intrusion at the top of the slug front; (v) the slug’s acceleration decreases first and then increases under the combined effects of its decreasing mass, nonlinear attenuation of the driving pressure, and increasing skin friction; (vi) the slug length has a constant rate of decrease.

Real-time measurement of laser beam characteristics for a waterjet-guided laser machine
Subasi, Levent; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Yaman, Ulaş (2022-01-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature.Waterjet-guided laser machining is a novel process used for precision cutting and drilling of various materials and geometries. There are many noise factors in the process affecting the laser beam characteristics, namely the effective cutting length and laser power in the waterjet. Although these variables are mainly set by the laser and waterjet parameters, uncontrollable factors result in variations. Pre...
Development of a three-dimensional basin model to evaluate the site effects in the tectonically active near-fault region of Gölyaka basin, Düzce, Turkey
Yousefi-Bavil, Karim; KOÇKAR, MUSTAFA KEREM; Akgün, Haluk (2022-01-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.The high seismicity and tectonic activity of the study area located in a near-fault region in Gölyaka, Düzce, results in a bedrock geometry highly complex in the sense of faulting and deformation. This makes this area very challenging in terms of a site response study that would aid seismic hazard assessment. This study develops a basin model to evaluate the site effects in the tectonically formed Plio-Quaternary fluvial sedimentary layer...
Modeling coastal Güzelyurt (Morphou) aquifer in northern Cyprus for mitigation of groundwater depletion through managed aquifer recharge
Demir, Cansu; Fanta, Debebe; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Ünlü, Kahraman (2022-08-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Groundwater depletion is considered a global problem. Coastal aquifers in arid and semiarid areas of the Mediterranean basin constitute typical examples of depleted aquifers. Güzelyurt (Morphou) Aquifer, the most important water resource for northern Cyprus, faces the problems of groundwater depletion and degradation of water quality near the coast due to significant amounts of groundwater extraction to satisfy the high demand....
A Minimal Maslov Number Condition for Displaceability in Certain Weakly Exact Symplectic Manifolds
Şirikçi, Nil İpek (2022-08-01)
© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.We present a proof of a result which gives an upper bound for the minimal Maslov number of a displaceable n-dimensional Lagrangian submanifold in a weakly exact symplectic manifold with minimal Chern number at least n. The proof utilizes a result on the Conley-Zehnder index of a periodic orbit of the flow of a specifically constructed Floer Hamiltonian and an index relation.

Two different satellite images, namely Landsat and Sentinel, were utilized while the competence of these two satellite images were analyzed. Unsupervised classification and vegetation indexes have been used from remote sensing techniques. It was observed...
