Coastal aquifers in arid and semiarid areas of the Mediterranean basin constitute typical examples of depleted aquifers. Güzelyurt (Morphou) Aquifer, the most important water resource for northern Cyprus, faces the problems of groundwater depletion and degradation of water quality near the coast due to significant amounts of groundwater extraction to satisfy the high demand. Recently, a water supply project, which transfers 75 million m3 of water from Turkey to northern Cyprus has been completed in June 2016 as a long-term remedy for serious water shortage problems in the northern part of the island. This project presents a unique opportunity for mitigating the depletion of the aquifer through relieving the existing high stress and helping to restore water levels by recharging the aquifer artificially with the available excess water. The objectives of this study are to develop 3-D detailed conceptual and numerical models of the aquifer, and to assess the potential for managed aquifer recharge by simulating the hydraulic behavior of aquifer under predefined artificial recharge and stress scenarios. The developed numerical model, after calibration and validation, was run for simulations of three different managed aquifer recharge scenarios focusing on the feasibility of restoring water levels to its “natural state” within a reasonable time frame. In all scenarios, a reasonable recovery of the groundwater depression zone was observed in about 11–14 years. However, the simulations showed that the aquifer has returned to its “natural state” in 48–73 years.

The mediator role of perceived social support in the relationship between difficulties in emotion regulation and suicide tendency

The purpose of the present study is to examine the possible mediator role of divergent aspects of perceived social support (family, friends, and significant other) in the...
Development of a three-dimensional basin model to evaluate the site effects in the tectonically active near-fault region of Gölyaka basin, Düzce, Turkey

© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.The high seismicity and tectonic activity of the study area located in a near-fault region in Gölyaka, Düzce, results in a bedrock geometry highly complex in the sense of faulting and deformation. This makes this area very challenging in terms of a site response study that would aid seismic hazard assessment. This study develops a basin model to evaluate the site effects in the tectonically formed Plio-Quaternary fluvial sedimentary layer...
Three-dimensional CFD analysis of liquid slug acceleration and impact in a voided pipeline with end orifice

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This research describes the dynamic behavior of an isolated slug driven by pressurized air in a voided line with an end orifice. A three-dimensional (3D) computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) model is used to simulate the rapid propulsion and impact at the orifice for given slug length and driving air pressure, and is validated against experimental data. New mechanisms are observed: (i) the driving air pressure at the slug...
Real-time measurement of laser beam characteristics for a waterjet-guided laser machine

© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature.Waterjet-guided laser machining is a novel process used for precision cutting and drilling of various materials and geometries. There are many noise factors in the process affecting the laser beam characteristics, namely the effective cutting length and laser power in the waterjet. Although these variables are mainly set by the laser and waterjet parameters, uncontrollable factors result in variations. Pre...

Two different satellite images, namely Landsat and Sentinel, were utilized while the competence of these two satellite images were analyzed. Unsupervised classification and vegetation indexes have been used from remote sensing techniques. It was observed...
