This thesis focuses on the material selection process in industrial design activity and existing material selection sources particularly used by industrial designers. Therefore, in this study, the knowledge about materials the designers need, and materials selection sources and the methods they use are explored. The aim is, to propose guidelines for a materials selection source basing on the designers̕ needs and expectations from such a guide. The thesis consists of a critical review of the literature on existing materials sources and a field study conducted with 20 industrial designers practicing in Turkey.

Analysing design processes: a study on graduation projects of industrial design students
Acar, Gün; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2004)
This study analyses students̕ design processes within a graduation project that is devised as to approximate a real-life design task. It comprises a literature search on developments in design methodology, and two field studies, a participant observation study followed by long interviews with a selection of the observation sample. Through the literature search, a framework representing the nature of the design activity is brought together on the basis of three studies in descriptive design methodology. Toge...
Origins, aims and method of basic design courses in industrial design programs in Turkey
Özer, Damla; Korkut, Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2004)
This study examines basic design courses in industrial design programs in Turkey, in terms of origins, aims and methods. The aim of the study is to inquire the differences and similarities, and to understand factors affecting the characteristics of basic design courses. A field study was conducted about the subject, which comprised of interviews with instructors of basic design courses and chairpersons in six departments offering undergraduate program in industrial design in Turkey. The field study indicate...
Implications of additive manufacturing applications for industrial design profession from the perspective of industrial designers
Alpay, Efe; Toksöz, Mehmet Refik; Department of Industrial Design (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the implications of additive manufacturing on industrial design profession and designers through an explorative study. Through a literature survey, implications of additive manufacturing technologies on industrial designers and industrial design profession were explored. Expanding literature survey with on-line searches, several experimental and commercial application examples of rapid manufacturing of products were identified. These identified examples were then...
Unfolding diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process: united network (UN) Studio-Möbius House , Arnhem Central Station , Mercedes Benz Museum
Kuyumcu, Başak; Önür, Selahattin; Department of Architecture (2010)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of the diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process. Identifying the utilization of the diagrams as infrastructural and organizational elements in the design process, it aims to be concentrate on their potency for generating novel design concepts. The search has been for the possibilities of design processes developed and manipulated not through analytical use of diagrams that represents the already established relationships but through th...
Parametric Urban Design Thinking: Shared Patterns in Design by Algorithm and Design by Drawing
Çalışkan, Olgu; Ongun, Gokhan (2021-12-01)
The paper suggests a focused examination of the processes of drafting-based design and parametric design in urbanism. It discusses how spatial design's settled cognition would differ by using algorithmic systems through the altered relationships between the basic operations in design. To reveal the commonalities and distinctions between the two design methods, the authors present the detailed documentation of the workshop series, which experimented with both techniques within similar design contexts. By the...
