During the evaluation of the seismic retrofitting option for risk reduction/mitigation measures to be applied over buildings, Benefit Cost Analysis is an often-used method. During this study of Benefit Cost Analysis, the condition that the earthquake can happen just after or sometime after retrofitting will be taken into consideration rather than some approaches that focus on the benefits and costs regarding the annual probability of the occurrence for possible earthquakes. The analysis will use conditional probability such that the earthquake will be assumed to occur at different periods of time (5, 10, 20 years etc.) after the mitigation measures are taken so that benefit-cost ratios and net social benefits can be observed over time using the results at these periods. Also during this study the indirect effects of earthquake such as business disruption, social disturbance will also be taken into consideration. As a final step, it is aimed to conclude with convincing financial results regarding the direct and indirect effects of the earthquake in terms of benefits and costs to encourage people and the public officials to reduce the potential vulnerability of the housing units people live by taking the necessary precautions against the earthquake

Seismic Risk Prioritization and Retrofit Cost Evaluation of Code-Deficient RC Public Buildings in Turkey
Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Yakut, Ahmet (SAGE Publications, 2015-02-01)
A risk prioritization procedure is developed for deficient concrete public buildings within the scope of a seismic risk reduction program. The main purpose is identifying public buildings with high damage risk in a region for efficient retrofit investments. Regularity of structural systems and repeatability of deficiencies in public buildings provide opportunities for developing simple and reliable assessment procedures. The proposed procedure is based on calculating a risk index from the comparison of late...
Schedule delay analysis in construction projects: a case study using time impact analysis method
Dayı, Songül; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2010)
Inadequate or weak preparatory work before starting construction of any structure may cause serious problems during the construction period. For example, projects without sufficient detailed drawings or construction schedules and a disorganized building site can create many problems in the management and completion of the construction works. Consequently, the cost of construction increases digressively, the construction duration of the project extends and the quality of construction is affected adversely. T...
Systemic seismic vulnerability and risk analysis for buildings, lifeline networks and infrastructures safety gain (SYNER-G)
Yakut, Ahmet(2013)
SYNER-G is research project which has the following main goals: (1) To elaborate appropriate, in the European context, fragility relationships for the vulnerability analysis and loss estimation of all elements at risk, for buildings, building aggregates, utility networks (water, waste water, energy, gas), transportation systems (road, railways, harbors) as well as complex medical care facilities (hospitals) and fire-fighting systems. (2) To develop social and economic vulnerability relationships for quantif...
Development of Fragility Curves for Single-Column RC Italian Bridges Using Nonlinear Static Analysis
Perdomo, Camilo; Monteiro, Ricardo; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Informa UK Limited, 2020-05-07)
The main objective of this study is to assess the accuracy and suitability of Nonlinear Static Procedures (NSPs) in the development of analytical damage fragility curves for seismic risk assessment of large portfolios of Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges. Seven NSP approaches, from widely used single-mode conventional pushover-based approaches to the more rigorous multi-mode conventional or adaptive pushover-based procedures are implemented. By systematically comparing fragility curve estimations in terms of...
Mapping Uncertainty for Risk and Opportunity Assessment in Projects
Qazi, Abroon; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Informa UK Limited, 2019-01-01)
Risk management is deemed as a critical process toward achieving the objectives of any project. A number of tools and techniques have been developed to help project managers reduce the risk involved in complex projects as risk is generally perceived as a negative event. However, uncertainty, which may lead to risk events may well result in opportunities. With the main aim of managing both risk and opportunity within an interdependent setting of interacting project uncertainties, we present a new thinking, c...
