During the operations of an agricultural tractor, front axle and front axle support encounter the worst load conditions of the whole tractor. If the design of these components is not verified by systematic engineering approach, the customers could face with sudden failures. Erkunt Agricultural Machinery Company, which is located in Ankara, has newly designed and manufactured the front axle support of its agricultural tractors. In this study, the design of 2WD (Wheel Drive) Erkunt Bereket Agricultural Tractor̕s front axle support has been verified by developing a verification method, which involves testing the tractor on a special test track and field and together with the computer aided engineering analysis, in order to prevent such failures in the lifetime of the tractor. For this purpose, a strain gage data acquisition system has been designed to measure the strain values on the component, while the tractor is operating on a test track and field. The locations of the strain gages have been determined by simulating the selected design load cases through finite element method. Measuring the maximum strains for the front axle support that have been experienced by the tractor while operating, the stress values have been calculated and the design safety has been investigated considering the material̕s tensile strength. Secondly, the fatigue life of the component regarding the acquired strain data has been predicted. These processes have led the company to verify the design of the front axle support.

Modelling and simulation of power steering system for agricultural tractors
Gültekin, İdil İlke; Cömert, Samet A; Erkal, Gül; Ünlüsoy, Yavuz Samim; Balkan, Raif Tuna (null; 2016-10-11)
This paper presents the development of models for the hydraulic and mechanical parts of the power steering system of an agricultural tractor. The hydraulic model is built using the component blocks from the Fluids toolbox of the Matlab/Simulink platform. The hydraulic part of the model is then integrated with the mechanical model of the front axle developed using the SimMechanics toolbox. The modeling procedure of the hydraulic system, containing a steering control unit, is described. The overall model allo...
Design and construction of boundary lubricated bearing test rig and wear analysis in earthmoving machinery
Tekin, Koray Serdar; Akkök, Metin; Söylemez, Eres; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
Excavators which used as earthmoving machinery are exposed to heavy loads and operate long hours repeatedly. The forces that are transmitted trough pin bearings are observed to cause failure due to wear. Therefore, durability of bearings is crucial for excavators. The aim of this study is to perform wear analysis of excavator bearings running in boundary lubrication regime. A hydraulically powered test rig, which simulates the operating conditions of excavator bearings is designed and constructed. Wear is o...
Design and simulation of an integrated active yaw control system for road vehicles
Tekin, Gökhan; Ünlüsoy, Yavuz Samim; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
Active vehicle safety systems for road vehicles play an important role in accident prevention. In recent years, rapid developments have been observed in this area with advancing technology and electronic control systems. Active yaw control is one of these subjects, which aims to control the vehicle in case of any impending spinning or plowing during rapid and/or sharp maneuver. In addition to the development of these systems, integration and cooperation of these independent control mechanisms constitutes th...
Development of an electrical machines analysis and optimum design software package
Göynük, Yılmaz; Ertan, Hulusi Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this study, three different programs are developed for the analysis of the three-phase induction motor, single-phase capacitor type induction motor and switched reluctance motor. The programs are developed by using Pascal and C++ programming languages. In the performance calculations of motors, analytical methods are used and these methods are tested for accuracy. These programs have also capabilities to design an optimum motor, which meets a set of performance, material and manufacturing constraints whi...
